How to Win the Ultimate Victory MY SON WON IN WRESTLING — NOW I’M WINNING IN LIFE

When my son Isaiah was a senior in high school, he made it all the way to the District Championship wrestling meet. This was a BIG deal for him, so on tournament day, our whole family showed up to cheer him on. The gym was packed. There were thousands — and I mean thousands! — of people screaming for their favorite wrestlers, especially the kids from the hometown high school. It was pretty clear: You were either a hometown wrestler or an underdog.

“Without you, Dad,” his finger said, “none of this would have happened.”

You can become the kind of person your grandkids’ grandkids talk about.

Man, that got me.

My mission in life has always been to make an impact in some way, shape, or form. I started with my kids, trying to guide their decisions and the directions they take in

their lives. Then I moved on to trying to positively influence my team at Heartland Investment Partners. After that, I reached out to my investors and partners. And finally, I spread my message to everyone who gets my newsletters, watches my YouTube videos, reads my emails, or listens to my podcast. Do you know why I talk up multifamily properties? Because I believe in this stuff. I really think that the more people invest in these properties, the better off they’ll be financially. They’ll be happier, their families will be more secure, and they’ll retire sooner. That’s the wisdom I have to offer. Ultimately, I want to pass on what I’ve learned, leave a legacy, and — as cheesy as it sounds — teach people how to improve their lives. If I can influence you to buy some multifamily property, that’s great. But if I can show you the impact YOU can have on the lives of others, that’s even better. Yes, that’s right: I’m saying YOU can become a person of influence. You can become the kind of person your grandkids’ grandkids talk about. In today’s society, most people are looking for guidance, leadership, and someone who can help them become better versions of themselves. You can be that someone. To find out how to spread your wisdom, scan the QR code on this page to watch my YouTube video, “How to Be a Person of Influence: The Ultimate Guide.” –Darin Garman

Isaiah was an underdog. Worse, he got stuck wrestling one of the best hometown guys right in front of his section of fans. They went back and forth on the mat, then back and forth again. Neither kid could pin the other. Gina, Madisen, Malory, and I stomped and whistled, cheering for him as loud as we could. But the other wrestler’s crowd was bigger and louder! I was starting to sweat. But with one minute left on the clock, Isaiah made his move. He did what he had to do to pin the other wrestler — and he won! We went absolutely crazy, screaming, yelling, and cheering. Then, the ref pulled Isaiah to his feet and raised his hand in the air. VICTORY! Isaiah’s eyes searched the crowd until he found me. He pointed at me with his free hand, then pointed to his bicep — right at the spot where he has a tattoo of my initials.

“Look, Dad!” his finger said, “This is your victory, too. It’s mine, but it’s also yours.”

That moment stopped me in my tracks. I already knew my kids looked up to me — but when Isaiah pointed to my initials, I really felt like I had INFLUENCED him in a big way. Isaiah was calling me out. He was saying that the time, effort, and energy I spent talking him out of quitting wrestling when he was a freshman, paying for his gear, taking him to practice after practice, and supporting him over and over had paid off. My influence had made him a better performer and a better wrestler.”

SHORT-FORM VIDEO MARKETING IS TAKING OVER Lights! Camera! Sales!

Any business incorporating the best marketing practices has been using videos to connect with its customers for years. But with the advent of TikTok and Instagram Reels, people want bite- sized clips to deliver information without fluff. Businesses looking to keep audiences engaged must begin incorporating short-form content into their marketing strategy. Most experts define short-form video as lasting 60 seconds or less, and Influencer Marketing Hub reports that 73% of internet users prefer them to longer videos. Social media has conditioned people to enjoy brief content that quickly gets to the point, and TikTok purposely shows users video after video. The format is also taking over other platforms, and users find loosely scripted, on-the-fly content more relatable than meticulously produced videos.

These are low-budget videos, so many marketers believe they have a higher return on investment (ROI) than traditional videos and are more likely to result in a viral hit. Best of all, the shorter the video, the more likely someone will watch until the end and absorb your entire message. But if your video doesn’t quickly grab a viewer’s attention, they know another potentially more interesting one will immediately follow. So, your videos should incorporate an instant hook to get users engaged. You might try a provocative question in the text over the video, an attention- grabbing song, or striking initial imagery. Many people new to short-form video don’t know where to start, so it’s crucial to note that it’s about more than making briefer versions of your existing content. Encourage user-generated content from people using your product, show behind-the- scenes clips that might interest your audience, or quickly answer a frequently asked question.

If you want to stay relevant, your marketing team should remain on top of the latest trends. We don’t recommend jumping on the bandwagon for every “challenge” that appears on your feed, but you should watch for trends that fit your brand and will resonate with your audience. Finally, remember that authenticity is the point. Short-form videos should be playful and spontaneous and talk directly to your audience. Users won’t connect and share if it looks like a TV commercial; they’ll see it as just another ad and keep scrolling.

Fortunately, research indicates that short-form videos attract more engagement than static images.

I’LL HANDLE THE BAD ACTORS FOR YOU! Go Ahead — Skip Tax Court to Watch Netflix

Some of the shows Gina and I watch remind me of being in “tax court.” Just a few weeks ago, I set the record for the most tax appeals submitted by one person! Of course, MY performance wasn’t anything like Kevin Costner’s in “Yellowstone.” But Costner could not hold a candle to the guy I went up

Like I said, I’m no Costner, but my team does have one thing in common with him. Just as true actors are always practicing their craft, we’re relentlessly looking for the best financing, insurance, maintenance companies, appreciation, and cash flow strategies to protect (and grow) our mutual investments.

against when I showed up to argue that the tax assessor had overvalued a handful of our properties in a big, big way.

This is hard work — not Hollywood glitter. In fact, that glitter reminds me of the stock market. Oscar night might look FUN, just like playing with stocks looks fun, but the party you see on TV glosses over the hell of casting calls, rejections, and 14-hour days that are the bread and butter of rank-and-file actors and actresses all across the U.S.

That guy SHOULD have won an Oscar because he did one bang-up acting job describing and justifying the value the tax assessor put on the properties. He spent 30 minutes “elaborating” on the properties’ values. The trouble is that he was wrong — by hundreds of thousands of dollars!

As I showed in tax court, serious investing trumps glitter every time. And if you’re one of those serious investors, go ahead: Skip tax court and watch Netflix. I’ve got your back.

Though I was shocked, he didn’t stand a chance. The best acting job is no match for preparation, a great understanding of multifamily values, and tons of experience. (Being right doesn’t hurt either.) I’m bringing this up because it’s one more thing YOU don’t have to deal with if you’re one of my partner investors/investment clients. You can sit home watching Netflix and glancing at my quarterly reports while I prepare for my performance protecting OUR investments from whack-job folks like this.

Delivering easy results (without Hollywood glitter),

–Darin

CHECK OUT SOME OF AMERICA’S BEST ZOOS

Summer is one of the best times of the year to travel. Kids are out

rare, endangered animals you can’t see elsewhere. It has the world’s largest nocturnal exhibit, and one of the major highlights is the Desert Dome, an 84,000-square-foot indoor desert that maintains an authentic desert ecosystem. This is a must-visit for any animal lover in your family. THE BRONX ZOO You don’t usually think about seeing exotic animals when you visit New York City, but the Bronx Zoo is one of the best places to view animals in America. Opened in 1899, the Bronx Zoo is responsible for many of the advancements relating to animal captivity. This was one of the first zoos to ditch cages for natural environments and create an animal hospital. With over 6,000 species, there’s an animal for everyone at the Bronx Zoo. THE LIVING DESERT ZOO AND GARDENS While the San Diego Zoo is often boasted as California’s largest and best zoo, another zoo is worth checking out. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens outside Palm Springs has entertained visitors for decades. There are events at this zoo every day, one of the most popular being the keeper connections and animal encounters, where you get up close and personal with the animals while learning more about their habitats and lifestyles.

If you’re looking to travel, you can visit a beach, take in the sights and sounds of an amusement park, or spend some time with animals while visiting a zoo. Nearly every state in our country has a handful of zoos or aquariums, but some stand above the rest.
