Christian Endeavor Notes [Continued from page 271] Oh, foolish priest and Levite—bitter scorn Through countless ages must thy portion be! And loss eternal— for the stranger’s hand Has gathered riches that were meant for thee. Not what we do alone our guiltiness, But what we fail of evil’s work to heal, Oh, shame to let the day’s concern—or prayer— .Crush down the pity that thy heart should feel. —W atchman -E xaminer . II. T he R eply While holding meetings in Egypt among some soldiers, J. Stuart Holden onee asked a big sergeant in a Highland regiment, how he was brought to Christ. His answer was: “ There is a private in our'company who was converted in Malta before the regiment came on to Egypt. We gave that fellow an awful time. One night he came in from sentry duty, very tired and wet, and before going to bed, he got down to pray. I struck him on the side o f his head with my boots, and he just went on with his prayers. Next morning I found my boots beautifully pol ished by the side of my bed. That was his reply to me. It just broke my heart, and I was saved that day.”— S elected . III. of professional life, we imagine that we can reach the heights o f spiritual blessing with out putting forth any definite effort. What a foolish mistake! The Christian life is a warfare; soldiers must be disciplined. The Christian life is a race; the athlete must practice. The Christian life is a school; the pupil must study. In the passage for study, Paul is thinking o f life as a race, and o f himself as a racer striving to reach a “goal” to obtain a “prize.” Paul’s aim was God’s aim. Listen to the apostle speak: “ I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am ap prehended o f Ch r i s t Jesus.” God had chosen Paul to be a great evangelist with a burning passion for Christ and for souls. Paul desired to be just what God wanted him to be. He knew what he was living for. Earlier in this same epistle, he ex pressed his desire: “ That I may win Christ, and be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is o f the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.” In the spirit of Paul, let us say, “ O Lord, Thy plan for my life is my plan.” A proper aim is fundamental. But there must be not only the choice o f a worthy objective, but also a constant effort to attain. Then we will concentrate as Paul did—“ This one thing I do.............I press toward the mark.” With like intensity of purpose, David said: “ One thing have I desired o f the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to be hold the beauty o f the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.” Tw.o more aspects are included in Paul’s [Continued on page 296]

Prayer. Leader’s Message. Discussion based on the following ques tions : 1. What is the highest aim I can set for myself this year? 2. What would be worth-while aims for this society this year? Which are most im portant? 3. Why should every committee have a program o f aims? Hymn—“Where He Leads Me.” Benediction—Psalm 19:14. Meditation on the Lesson This magnificent declaration of the great apostle has been the inspiration of count less New Year’s resolutions. And it is lit tle wonder— for this is the ne plus ultra of resolutions. In making this one, the Chris tian has included all others that are worth while. The reader is gripped by the buoyancy and the rigid determination here expressed by this aged warrior. In this statement of purpose, the Apostle Paul is revealing the secret o f his own life. He is letting us know what made him the sort o f Christian that he was. Unfortunately, while many o f us realize that it takes concentration and persistence to gain distinction in any field

MOODY BIBLE INSTITUTE MONTHLY SAYS: “ We have read every page with relish and can set our seal to its closing sentence: ‘Those who in all sincerity desire independent proof of the correctness of Christ’s attitude to the Old Testament will welcome the new knowledge that archaeology is giving us.* Highly valuable because of the plain manner in which the data are set forth,_ challenging the interest of the average man. The text contains proof of the original monotheism and the usé of the Old Testament names for God long before the days of Moses. Proof of the Flood, of the dispersion after the Flood, of the supremacy of Shem, and the subservience of Canaan are also presented.’’ Handsome Cloth Binding, $ 2 .0 0
