AUGUST 1 Music for Harps of Gold
A u g u s t 4 The Divine Pilot Takes Control "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you" (Jas. 4:8 ). God . . . comes to us in many ways. I met an airman who found Him when he first ventured up into the air alone. Eight thousand feet up, the earth hidden by clouds, nothing but space around him, he ■felt lost. He was alone in God’s universe— he and his machine; and he began to won der whether he, too, was only a machine, whether, as the petrol would exhaust in the airplane, his life, too, would die out, and there would be an end o f both. Then it came to his consciousness that as he had control of his machine, so God had control of him, and there, in the wide expanse, away from all else in the world, God came to him, as God does come to people today. When He comes, we realize that we are surrounded and supported, gripped and guided, by God, and we learn to worship. Not able o f ourselves to reach up to God, God comes down to us by His blessed Spirit.—W . Y. F ullerton . AUGUST 5 Trustful Obedience “ Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us” (Psa. 62:8). The word “trust” is a beautiful word. . . . Trust is confidence placed in the highest Being in the universe, who cannot lie, cannot deceive, cannot be false, cannot be faithless. This trust becomes committal —the absolute abandonment o f oneself to the Lord, cutting loose from all other de pendence, and all other trust, and all other bonds o f union, that we may simply rest at the feet of Christ, and repose in His fidel ity and affection. Then comes the element o f obedience as the result o f all the rest, because both belief and trust in the Scrip tures have to do with moral issues. And if you believe what God has spoken, and trust in God’s truth and fidelity, you are bound to obey.—A. T. P ierson . AUGUST 6 Out of Anguish into Blessing “For I reckon that the sufferings o f this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Rom. 8:18). From the suffering of baffled plans which have brought you the keenest disappoint ment o f life, from the suffering of per sonal bereavements which have torn from your presence loved ones unspeakably precious to your soul, from the suffering of temporal losses and broken fortunes, from the suffering which has stalked into your life through the willfulness and sin of others, from the suffering which seemed at times to bring you to the brink o f a broken faith and a broken heart—yea, suf fering one, out o f your very agony of heart and soul somehow, oh, somehow, the eter nal God of love and mercy is seeking to bring into your life the supremest blessing that can enrich and glorify that life—the blessing o f a human will yielded to the will of God. What a place is that for you I
“ Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and bless ing” (Rev. 5:12). A wandering sheep, my feet have known How rough can be the mountain’s brow : How dark and desolate and lone Can be the wilderness; but now— O angels, strike a joyful note Upon your harps of gold, For I would sing o f Him whose love Hath brought me to the fold 1 And who shall say that those who trust In Christ the Lord may not prevail? Secure from every blow and thrust, Unmoved, though countless foes assail I O angels, strike a joyful note Upon your harps of gold, For I would sing o f Him whose hand Is mighty to uphold. — R obert C ru m ly . "All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet after ward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, even the fruit of righteousness” (Heb. 12:11, R. V .). A warmer, less forbidding word than “chastening” is “ child-training,” or “edu cation.” Our loving Father, in preparing His children for the larger, fuller, busier life o f the gloryland must let each child pass through experiences which seem to be joyless, sorrowful. The writer of the let ter to the Hebrews does not deny the pain fulness of such tests, but he hastens to point out that a right use o f them will yield worth-while results to the sufferer. It depends on our attitude toward the chastening whether it will produce the peaceable fruit o f Christ’s righteousness in our character, or whether it will result in the bitter fruit o f chafing resentfulness. Our loving Father’s heart is sympathizing with us in the sorrowful, child-training ex perience, and so we may begin to enjoy the peaceable fruit even while still undergoing the painful trial of our faith. — China’s Millions. AUGUST 3 Shall Sin Be Ignored? “ The blood o f Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1 :7). The moment the soul is conscious of fail ure, pf coming short, or of transgressing, the only safe way is at once to confess, and come to the blood that cleanses from all sin. There is nothing more dangerous, or more damaging to the conscience than to to say that is not sin, which we know is sin, simply because we are afraid that by such an admission our theory of holiness will break down, and the blessing be at an end. We are freed from these perplexi ties in the path o f obedience when our doc trine is sound and scriptural, and our ex perience is up to the level of our privileges. — E van H . H opk in s .
