Seated in glory at God’s right hand, There interceding—“ Forgive!” His de mand. If we should sin—when confession we make— Cleansing, forgiveness, and pardon we take! Glorious Jesus, Advocate, Friend! Love and adore Him, trust to the end! — R ussell E. K a u f f m a n . AUGUST 11 The Expulsive Power of a New Affection “ Ye are the temple of the living God” (2 Cor. 6:16). Sometimes professing Christians are beset by special hindrances to their useful ness—tendencies of speech or action that mar the beauty of holiness most sadly. What are you going to do with that evil habit, or the half-dozen which are hinder ing you? Fight them one by one—that is one way. What did you do last winter when the panes o f the window were cov ered with frost, and you could not see out of them? Did you scratch the frost off with a knife? That would take too long. Heat up the room and the frost goes off the pane. Warm up the soul with the love of Christ, and the bad habits will run off. That is what Chalmers calls the “ expulsive power of a new affection.” Bring Jesus Christ into the soul and you will overcome the evil habits.—T. L. C uyler . AUGUST 12 Watch unto Prayer “ Watch thou in all things” (2 Tim. 4:5 ). W e should pray as if all depended upon God, and work as though everything de pends upon us.-— M artin L uth er . Prayer is not conquering God’s reluc tance, but taking hold of God’s willing ness.— S elected . Watching and praying, Jesus went forth in majesty; but the drowsy disciples, to flee and escape.— P endleton . Watching should always be accompanied by praying (1 Pet. 4 :7). The reason why Christians today have so little realization o f the need o f prayer is that they do not watch (Eph. 6:18). He who both watches and prays has no need to fear the outcome (1 Cor. 10:12, 13; 2 Pet. 2:9 ). He who does not watch has no right to rest on these promises.—R. A. T orrey . | AUGUST 13 The Old Mule’s Wisdom “But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee" (Job 12:7). A man had an old worn-out mule that he wanted to dispose of, also an old cistern that he wanted to fill. He came to the con clusion that it would be a fine idea to put the old mule into the cistern, throw in a lot o f loose earth upon him, and thus fill up the cistern. The time arrived to carry out his plan, so the mule was caught and led to the brink o f the cistern and pushed into it while a number o f farmers pro ceeded to throw in the dirt. As Providence seemed to arrange it, the old mule landed on his feet; therefore as the earth showered down upon him, he would shake himself, and let it drop beneath his feet, and would then tramp it down. As the earth con tinued to shower upon him, he continued to shake his body, and tramp with his feet, until the cistern was filled to the top. Then he stepped out, and quietly walked back to the barnyard. Would to God that all Christians were as courageous and deter mined in the “fight o f faith” as was this old mule in his “ well experience.” —Spiritual Lessons from Everyday Life.

. . . All that brings you there is worth its costliest price o f blood and suffering. — J am es H. M c C onkey . AUGUST 7 Our Victorious Lord "Stand against the wiles o f the devil" (Eph. 6:11). I f you have started in the Lord, ad vanced in the gospel, are drawing on His grace, living by faith and the will o f God, then you need not be afraid to hear o f and to face this desperate foe. Alone, apart from the Lord, you are a despicable weak ling, ensnared and bound in a moment. With the Lord on your side, and in the power o f His might, clad in His armor, and girt with His weapons, you shall be “able to stand against the wiles of the devil” 1 “able to withstand in the evil day” ; able to “quench all the fiery darts o f the wicked.” Lay stress on the Lord, His might, and His armor. Let your boast be o f Him and your confidence in Him. . . . Maintain your ground; stand fast. Pre pare to advance, abounding in the work of the Lord.— H ubert B rooke . AUGUST 8 Riches Received Through Poverty “ O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was” (John 17:5). Such glory as Jesus had with the Father before the world was, He first laid aside that He might be made like unto us, in glorious in all things. . . . Oh, the adorable grace of our Lord Jesus Christ! Have you sounded with Him the depths o f your own poverty, and learned with Him to renounce before your Maker all pre tence o f independence? Are you in your esteem as poor as Jesus when they laid Him in the tomb of Joseph—a mere slain man— forfeit to the law through sin? Then you are content now to owe all your riches to Another, and see how rich that makes y ou ! As rich as Jesus on His throne! For your sakes, He became poor, for this very end, that ye through His poverty might be come rich.—J. O swald D yk es . AUGUST 9 Overcoming Discouragement " Walk worthy of. the Lord unto all pleas ing” (Col. 1 :10). Be not discouraged if at the first attempt thou failest to realize this life. Though thy communion with God be a hundred times, yea, a thousand times interrupted, do not suffer thyself to be paralyzed by these sad experiences. It is true that the wrong done to thy soul by even one mo mentary separation from God, such as one sin can occasion—a sin by thought, or word, or deed— is far more disastrous than thou canst know. Nevertheless, there may be something worse, something which adds evil to evil, namely, permitting thyself to be discouraged instead o f returning imme diately to God in order to find in Him pardon and renewing o f life. — S tockm ayer . AUGUST 10 Priestly Intercession “For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the fig ures o f the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us” (Heb. 10:24). Christ the Redeemer, Advocate true, Entered the Holy o f Holies for you ; There to appear in the presence of God, Keeping you free from the fall of His rod; High Priest eternal, meeting your need, Ruler supernal, Saviour indeed!
