Any form of collaboration not approved by the instructor. 4. Academic Fraud and Fabrication: Engaging in deceitful practices related to academic work. Includes: Purchasing or obtaining papers or assignments from others. Fabricating or falsifying data, results, or academic records. Facilitating academic dishonesty by helping others cheat. 5. Misuse of Technology: Inappropriate use of technology to gain an unfair advantage. Includes: Using AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) to generate or modify work without authorization. Accessing unauthorized online resources during assessments. Note: The policy regarding the use of AI in academic work will be expanded below (AI Use Policy) to provide more comprehensive guidelines and expectations. AI Use Policy Our commitment to academic integrity and Christian values guides our approach to AI use. Rooted in the biblical mandate to love God with all our minds (Matthew 22:37; Mark 12:30), we believe that as Christian students, the desire to honor God through our academic work should naturally deter us from cheating or misusing AI. While AI can be a valuable tool for cognitive unloading and enhancing productivity, it should not undermine the development of critical thinking skills or replace the learning processes that are essential to our education. In other words, AI should be used in ways that support, rather than replace, the intellectual work that sharpens our minds. Individual professors will provide specific guidance on acceptable AI use within their courses, promoting ethical practices aligned with our academic standards. Guidelines for AI Use 1. Ethical Use: Students must use AI ethically, ensuring that any AI-generated content is properly attributed and does not constitute academic dishonesty. 2. Instructor Authorization: AI tools may be used for specific tasks only with the explicit permission of the instructor. Unauthorized use of AI to complete assignments, exams, or other academic work is prohibited. 3. Disclosure: When AI is used in the creation or modification of academic work, students must disclose this use and follow any citation guidelines provided by the instructor. Monitoring and Enforcement Davis College uses Winston AI software to help maintain academic integrity by scanning student work for potential plagiarism and unauthorized AI use. However, Winston AI is just one of several tools available to professors. When evaluating potential academic dishonesty, professors will: • Review the Winston AI report for indications of plagiarism or AI-generated content. • Consider the context and nature of the assignment, including the student's writing style and previous work. • Take into account any additional evidence, such as drafts or version histories, to understand the student's writing process. • Use their professional judgment to assess whether academic dishonesty has occurred, rather than relying solely on AI detection. • If Winston AI or other tools indicate a potential violation, the professor will follow the procedure outlined in the next section of this policy to address the issue. Penalties for Academic Dishonesty 1. Whenever a student is found guilty of any kind of academic dishonesty, the instructor must report this in writing to both the student and the Registrar’s Office. This report will become part of the student’s record. The Registrar will check the student’s record for any previous offenses to assist the instructor in determining appropriate grading penalties.
