very strong: 'T brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof, and the goodness thereof: but when ye entered ye defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomina tion.” Hence the land "needed a cleansing sacrifice, whereby it could again be come a holy land.” Only Christ, the Goel (Kinsman-Redeemer), could re deem Israel and the land of Israel, and the title-deed to Canaan is now in the hand of Jesus, sealed with the precious blood. Israel can obtain peaceable possession of the Holy Land only by coming to Christ. He became the Kinsman-Avenger of the nation, and holds in His hands every blessing promised to Israel. Israel’s title to Canaan is thus com plete; but the holder thereof Is Israel’s Redeemer— the Lord Jesus Christ. He writes: “ The Jewish spirit is recovering its homeland. But it cannot be said sin cerely that the Jewish leaders have risen to the stupendous task still be fore them, that they haye dealt with the living land of Israel as statesmen of courage, dignity and ,vision. . . . “ The vision of the great Herzl was absent. Israel’s Title to Canaan By Rev. Thomas M. Chalmers

(From "Israel in Covenant and H is tory ” (25 cts.) by Thomas M. Chjalmers, 2654 Marion Ave., New Y ork C ity). Israel’s possession of Canaan as an everlasting inheritance is based on an indefeasible title. The Jewish people have six titles to Canaan based on the six modes of obtaining property in land. 1. By homestead law. When the Nations homesteaded the earth In the days of Peleg (Gen. 10:25), God re served Palestine for Israel: "When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when He separated the sons of Adam, He set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel" (Deut. 32:8). This was 251 years before the birth of Abraham, 326 years before the first promise to Abraham (Gen. 12 :7 ), and 796 before Israel entered Canaan. The Giants and Canaanites who dwelt in the land had only squatter rights and no title from God. 2. By gift or grant. “ A gift can not be duplicated, bought or sold." God did not give Canaan to the Canaanites when He had reserved it for Israel. 3. By Covenant. Israel Is forever a blood marked people, "bearing in their flesh an Imprint of the transfer of Canaan." By circumcision Jesus entered personally as the God-man into the Abrahamic covenant,” and so became the legal heir to the land of Canaan. Through Abraham, Christ is | heir to Canaan and to all the world I (Rom. 4:13 ). •4. By conquest. This principle Is j recognized in Joshua 11:15-20: Judges 11:21-27. 5. By right of tenure. This right is acknowledged in the Law of Omar, the Moslem Conqueror of Jerusalem A.D. 637. Israel held Palestine 845 years, from 1451 to 606 B.C. and again 605 years, from 536 B.C. to 70 A.D.; but under the over lordship of Gentile powers. Israel lost no rights by leav ing the homestead, or by eviction, or by the Moslem conquest. Although Ish- mael, the ancestor of the Arabs, was a son of Abraham, he was not the legal heir. The gift to Abraham and his seed, in the line of Isaac and Jacob, is “ forever” ; the covenant is “ forever” ; the sign of circumcision is “ forever.” Nothing was abrogated by the New Dispensation, as we see from Jer. 31: 31, 35-37; „33:23-26; Luke 1:55, 70- 76. The land is now In captivity as well as the people (Jer. 33:11). .6. By purchase. If given, how can it be purchased? Christ had a perfect title to Canaan by right pf birth and circumcision as the seed of Abraham (Gal. 3 :16 ). But Canaan had become polluted by the sins'of the Canaanites and of Israel, as we see clearly In Lev. 18:24-28;iDeut. 21:1-9; Isa. 24:4-6 (for “ earth” read land, i,e. the land of Israel Jer. 2:7^ This last verse Is
