and silver, the color was furnished by gaily and richly col ored feathers of tropical birds. The monarch himself was arrayed in the most costly magnificence. A necklace of emeralds of unusual size and hue adorned his neck, and his head was crowned with gold. He had a kingly bearing. “ As he approached, Friar Valverde advanced to meet him and began to expound the doctrines of his religion. He sought to show the Inca that Pizarro was one of the suc cessors of St. Peter, and therefore was the rightful heir to authority in this land to which they had come for this pur pose. He at last made it clear to the proud old Inca that they wished him to lay down bis rulership and acknowledge the headship of another. “ The proud oid Inca disdainfully refused, as one would naturally expect him to do, and hastily the friar returned to Pizarro and counselled immediate action. Promising to absolve him, he urged Pizarro to hasten before more Indians should congregate. Pizarro waved his white scarf, as had been prearranged, and at once the massacre of the defense less Indians began. They were slain by the thousands. At last the monarch was reached and taken prisoner. “ The next morning Inca Atahualpa said, 'For my freedom I will fill this room with gold as high as I can reach.’ The promise was fulfilled. Temples were stripped, and the ran som paid, but that did not satisfy the Spaniards. “ Friar Valverde evilly counselled more cruel measures still, for he realized that a ruler loved as Atahualpa was would never be a negative quantity, and that while he lived the Spaniards would always be in danger of revolt. So the death warrant was signed by the bloodthirsty friar, a repre sentative of the Roman Catholic church, and not by a dare devil adventurer, and so Atahualpa was strangled. At first it was decreed that he should be burned, but the sentence was mitigated when be agreed to kiss the crucifix. Oh, hideous travesty in the name of religion! “ The conquerors swept the country, with the bloody cross as their standard, and at its end Cuzco lay in ruins. The people, sad eyed and terror stricken, were compelled through the torture of the rack to accept the religion of the conquerors, and then the Spanish king sent them a beautiful image of the crucifix. So did they begin to worship their new god. ' j ■ "As a boy, Rose, I wanted to get back at the Spaniards. I wanted to punish them as they had treated the Indians, but long ago that passed from my life, and I felt sorry for them, for they were in need of the Gospel of salvation as were the poor Indians. My great desire was then, and is now, to bring these people into living touch with the Christ, and they will rise to greater heights and greater deeds than those of old. For their ideals will be purer, and founded on a surer rock, and their conquests will be for Christ’s king dom and will last throughout eternity.” As they gazed in silence at the city, none too friendly, in their hearts was only love for the inhabitants and a great desire to help them in the most effectual way. They were filled with new purpose and new courage. As they went back to their quarters in the old and inter esting city, Rose felt she had been transferred to a distant past and to the old city as it was before the days of the conqueror. She, too, longed to make Christ real to these people. With the closing of the year of residence in' Cuzco, a much longer stay than they had anticipated, came the deed of the ten thousand acre farm secured by the mission board. As they prepared to move to the farm, they realized how
