Zero Waste Packaging Surges by Greg Kishbaugh The global zero waste packaging market size is expected to reach $502.6 billion by 2030, expanding at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 9.6 percent from 2023 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Rising Awareness The increasing awareness about sustainable packaging products across industries, developing infra- structure for waste management, and sensible disposal practices across developed and some de- veloping countries are driving the market. • The paper and cardboard ma- terial segment held a dominant revenue share of more than 75 percent in 2022. The developed in- frastructure for closing the loop of old corrugated containers (OCC) in the manufacturing industry, where it has the highest recycling rate of around 90 percent across the globe, is supporting the segment growth. • The reusable/recyclable pack- aging type segment accounted for the largest revenue share of more than 95 percent in 2022 and is pro- jected to maintain its dominating position throughout the forecast Digital Edition Exclusive:

Over-Packaging Frustrates Shoppers by Greg Kishbaugh O nline shoppers are frustrated with a glut of packages ar- riving too big for the products being shipped, too flimsy, covered with too much tape or not being waterproof or re- cyclable, according to a new survey conducted by DS Smith.
Consumers in the survey (81 percent) overwhelmingly said sustainability of packaging matters to them, so much so that about 40 percent would pay more for that. A third said they would pay up to 24 percent more, and nearly another third would pay at least 25 percent or more. DS Smith said the results underscore its efforts to provide environmentally friendly products that replace problem plastics, remove car- bon from supply chains and provide recycling solutions.

so it can be reused or recycled. Oversized boxes containing excess packing mate- rial take up more space during transit, so the po- tential ripple effect is unnecessary delivery trips, which can have an impact on the amount of carbon emissions being produced.
The poll also showed widespread support among consumers to recycle. More than 40 percent said their recycling has increased since the onset of the COVID pandemic in March 2020, and nearly 70 per- cent said they recycle cardboard packaging from online deliveries always or most of the time. That embrace of recycling matches the spike in e-commerce, with two thirds saying their frequency of buying online has increased, and more than half saying they expect that to continue to grow. Still, consumers expressed frustrations. Citing boxes with too much extra space, 38 percent said about half of their deliveries were filled with air and 39 percent said it was a quarter of air. Among other problems with their packages: • Too big for the products being shipped, 41 percent • Uses too much filler, 29 percent • Not waterproof, 27 percent • Is flimsy and easily damaged, 25 percent • Uses too much plastic tape, 24 percent
“Online shopping remains popular so the onus is on business to design out waste and make sure ma- terials can stay in use for as long as possible,” said DS Smith’s Melanie Galloway, Vice President Sales Marketing and Innovation. “The idea of oversized boxes, containing excess packing material, that in turn overly fill delivery trucks, is not something any of us should perpetuate - consumers don’t want it, businesses can’t afford it, and ultimately the planet won’t thank us for it.”
• Difficult to open, 21 percent • Not recyclable, 12 percent
In a signal of their push for sustainable products, two thirds of consumers (64 percent) surveyed said they would be more likely to purchase products either packaged in or using paper and cardboard

period. The reusable and recyclable packaging products are usually manufactured from paper and paperboard, glass, and metal. • The edible packaging type segment is expected to expand at the highest CAGR of 18.9 percent over the forecast period owing to its sustainability and eco-friendliness. Increasing awareness about this newly developed packaging solution across devel- oping economies is further driving the market. • Based on the distribution channel, the offline segment accounted for the maximum revenue share of more than 50 percent in 2022 and is projected to maintain its dominance throughout the forecast period. The high penetration of the offline system in the end-use market is a major factor supporting its dominance in the global market. • The e-commerce application segment is expect- ed to expand at the highest CAGR of 10.3 percent in terms of revenue over the forecast period. The continuously expanding customer base for online purchasing, especially post the coronavirus pan- demic, is supporting the growth of the segment. • The Central and South America region is ex- pected to expand at a CAGR of 9.8 percent in terms of revenue over the forecast period. The region is projected to exhibit growth on account of the in-
creasing internet penetration and awareness about sustainable packaging solutions in major countries including Brazil and Argentina. The rising awareness about various types of en- vironment-friendly packaging solutions offered by international organizations through the electronic medium is further supporting the demand for zero waste packaging.

For Bobst, it is the next step on a journey toward greater sustainability, which the company has es- tablished as one of the four core pillars of its strate- gy and vision of the packaging industry, along with automation, digitalization, and connectivity. More than 4,000 companies are working with the SBTi to reduce their emissions in line with climate science. Signatories are required to set ambitious carbon reduction targets, which are independently assessed and verified, and align with the newest science and recommendations from the Intergov- ernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Com- panies must also disclose results on a yearly basis. Of note, the carbon emissions generated by Bobst production sites represent only a fraction of its over- all carbon footprint. Around 90 percent of green- house gas emissions associated with Bobst activi- ties occur downstream in the value chain, through the use of sold products. This highlights the need to work collaboratively and for Bobst to play a key role in the design, maintenance and operation of its machines to lower their environmental impact during their lifetime, jointly with customers.

New Report: Flexible Packaging Market Rising According to a new report from ResearchAndMar- kets.com, the flexible packaging market in North America is deemed to attain a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 4.17 percent in revenue and 3.48 percent in volume over the forecasting years from 2022 to 2028. The United States and Canada shape the market in the region. In the United States, the rising demand for flexible packaging has compelled market players to invest heavily in product innovation. Furthermore, the increasing e-commerce industry has boosted the demand for convenient packaging solutions. The growing product innovations are ex- pected to widen the scope of the flexible packaging market. The Canadian flexible packaging market is pri- marily driven due to the rapidly-developing pack- aging & frozen food industry. The food & beverage processing industry is the second largest sector in the country, accounting for 17 percent of the overall manufacturing shipment as well as 2 percent of Canada’s gross domestic product. Furthermore, the rising adoption of organic food, integrated with the increase in health conscious- ness and the need for convenient and ready-to-use food, has further influenced the demand and in- creasing utility of flexible packaging in Canada. ePac Flexible Packaging Expands In UK ePac Flexible Packaging will be adding a second sales and manufacturing location in the United Kingdom. Adding to existing operations in Silver- stone, ePac Sheffield will serve CPG brands of all sizes throughout Northern England, Scotland, and Ireland. The site will be combined with existing sites in Poland, France, and the previously announced site in Innsbruck, Austria. “Our new sales and manufacturing location in Sheffield will get us even closer to our local and regional brands, as well as larger brands with a pan-European or global presence,” said Johnny Hobeika, Managing Director of ePac Europe. “Fur- thermore, we have recently launched ePacONE (One Network Everywhere), a proprietary cloud- based system that connects all 24 ePac locations across the globe.”

ALFT Opens Flexo Plate Production Facility ALFT Packaging has opened a new flexo packag- ing production plant in Kotugoda, Sri Lanka. To bring plate production in-house, ALFT installed a FLEXCEL NX 4260 System at the new production facility, providing plates for its new Windmöller & Hölscher Miraflex II press. “Investing in in-house flexo platemaking and printing gives us total control of production and delivers a host of benefits that are relevant to our customers,” said Chairman Lakshman De Fonseka. “The faster turnaround with flexo is a particular advantage, enabling packaging design changes — to color or for regional variations — to be expedit- ed. With gravure, we’re talking about lead times of three to four weeks for cylinders, which all have to be imported. And if a cylinder gets damaged during production, you wait ten to 12 days for a replacement. Compare that to the 90 minutes to make new FLEXCEL NX Plates, and the advantages are obvious.” While Lakshman acknowledges that gravure is still the dominant process in the South and South- east Asian markets, in the future he foresees the steady migration to flexo. “It’s just a question of
changing customers’ mindsets, and the best way to do that is to show them the results. So, we are grad- ually moving work previously gravure printed to flexo, with our customers’ consent of course. Our approach is that whenever there’s a change to a product, we take the opportunity to propose a flexo version. In our experience, as long as we can show brand owners that flexo quality is every bit as good as the gravure, they’re very comfortable with the change. Especially when they get all the additional efficiency benefits that come with flexo.”

Coca-Cola Packaging Targets Sight Impaired
Coca-Cola has rolled out NaviLens codes across packs of its Christmas can multipacks, which can be scanned with a mobile phone camera from dis- tances of up to four metres to help blind and par- tially sighted consumers, and are readable even when unfocused. The company said it is the UK’s first beverage company to launch on-pack technology for visual- ly impaired shoppers. This follows a successful pi- lot and roll out of the technology by Kellogg’s and Aunt Bessie’s, who rolled out packs with NaviLens codes in September 2022. NaviLens is similar to a QR code but can be detect- ed in a fraction of the time and up to three meters away. A smartphone can detect the optic, and play- back information to the user. Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) has incorporated the technology onto large Christmas can multipacks. The codes will feature on the cardboard outers. In another development, Microsoft and Haleon launched a new feature to Microsoft’s Seeing AI app that reads health product labels aloud for people who are blind or have impaired vision. The app is currently available in the US and UK and compatible with more than 1,500 consumer health products.

The new facility is expected to employ more than 550 people, who will produce flexible packaging for food and personal-care products. The plant comes equipped with the first automated packag- ing production line in China. This, along with high- speed printing presses, laminators, and bag-mak- ing machines, can deliver double-digit reductions in manufacturing cycle times. Amcor is also deploying a smart production and operation system, which includes smart laser scan- ners, light curtains, high-standard machine guard- ing and multiple quality-control points. All key process equipment is also CE-certified to stringent European Union health, safety and environmental requirements. Other benefits of the new facility are traceability throughout the production cycle, a climate-controlled production environment and low-carbon emission production. The plant features three labs with testing and an- alytical capabilities to fully leverage the expertise from the recently opened Amcor Asia Pacific Inno- vation Center in Jiangyin, China. The new Huizhou site also includes several sus- tainability features, including the latest regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTO) system to reduce harmful emissions, as well as a number of energy-reduction, heat-recovery, low-power consumption and rain- water harvesting systems to help reduce its carbon footprint and environmental impact. Divesting In Russia Amcor has also completed the sale of its three fac- tories in Russia to HS Investments, a Russian-based investor, after receiving all necessary regulatory approvals and cash proceeds, including receipt of closing cash balances. The cash and debt-free con- sideration value is 370 million EUR. This follows Amcor’s previously announced deci- sion to pursue the orderly sale of its Russian busi- ness. The Russian business produces flexible and car- ton packaging from one site in St. Petersburg and two sites in Novgorod and employs approximately 900 people. Amcor’s three sites in Russia generated approximately two percent of total Amcor sales in fiscal 2022.
