NOW READ THE PROPHETS OF OLD IN THE LANGUAGE OF TODAY!
The Prophets have a loud mes sage for us today, but it is hard for us to hear it. For the rich treasures of the Hebrew lan guage often leave clarity behind when converted into English. Is it any wonder that even mature Christians—let alone teenagers and youth—are apt to confess that they have read the Prophets only once, long ago, and with little understanding? Here in this book is an accurate, readable presentation of these vastly important portions of the Bible.
H e t o s s e d on his bed unable to sleep, deeply troubled. However he tried, he could not dismiss the deep sense of guilt from his mind. The Psalmist had sinned against God. In despair he finally turned to God and said, “ I will confess my sins unto the Lord.” He continued, “ Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin” (Psalm 32:5b). “Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow” (Psalm 51:7b). The psalmist met God in a personal way. He prayed a personal prayer. His sin was against God. The only way to remove it was to confess it to God and forsake it. This is the sinner’s way to God. Jesus commissioned His disciples with these words, “ . . . that repent ance and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all na tions . . .” (Luke 24:47). Repentance is the way for men to respond to the gospel and come to God for forgive ness. This is a matter between the sinner and God. A man asked a Christian friend how to find the way to God and for giveness for his sins. The friend re plied, “ Pray to God and ask Him to forgive your sins.” “ I don’t know how to pray,” the man said. The friend then said, “ I shall pray and if you wish to do so, pray the prayer with me.” The Christian then prayed, pausing after each phrase so that the inquirer could follow audibly with him. “ Almighty God, I come to You in Jesus’ name. I have sinned and am sorry for my sins. Forgive me for Jesus’ sake. I believe Jesus is the Son of God and the Saviour of the world. I believe Your Word that You forgive me. And now I am Your child. Thank You for forgiving my sins and saving me.” The friend then asked the inquirer, “ Do you believe that God did for you what you asked Him to do?” His immediate reply wa» “ I believe that He forgave me and I am now His child.” This is the way for a sinner to come to God. We are the ambassadors of Christ. We are commissioned to help sinners come to God. If they do not know how to pray, we may assist them by helping them to pray a peni tent’s prayer. JUNE, 1965
