Our Thanksgiving Tradition Sharing Stories With Tony’s Turkey Trot
Every year, my Thanksgiving starts bright and early. Danielle and I take our daughter, Isabella, and the whole family to participate in Tony’s Turkey Trot. This 5K run benefits TBI Fund Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to raising funds and awareness for anyone who has suffered from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). In Florida alone, more than 210,000 people are living with TBIs, and this condition can be a physical and emotional strain on everyone involved. Tony’s Turkey Trot was started by Anne Marie Tucker and named after her father, Tony Meduri. Tony suffered a TBI after being hit by a drunk driver while heading home after a car show. Left without any short-term memory, Tony spent years receiving 24/7 care at a TBI facility in Clearwater. But there is a lot more to Tony than his accident or injury. Born in Italy, Tony came to the United States with his family when he was 9 years old. At 17, Tony broke his neck and ended up getting his high school diploma while still in the hospital after being told he would never walk again. But Tony wasn’t the kind of guy who just gave up. After intensive therapy and rehab, Tony regained the use of his body. He would graduate from the police academy, raise two daughters, and spend 32 years on Investment Advisory Services offered through Retirement Wealth Advisors (RWA), a Registered Investment Advisor. Wolf Retirement Navigation LLC and RWA are not affiliated. Investing involves risk including the potential loss of principal. the force before retiring as a lieutenant from the Delaware River Port Authority. Like many people, Tony knew Florida was the perfect place to retire, so he built a home here in the Sunshine State and spent his time taking his prized ’34 Ford to car shows. In addition to helping get care for over 210,000 Floridians who suffer from TBIs, Tony’s Turkey Trot reminds us that everyone has a story. Danielle’s sister, Candace, suffered from a traumatic brain injury after being thrown from her horse. She lived the last 13 years of her life without any long- or short-term memories. I never got a chance to meet Candace before her accident, but I enjoyed hearing stories about her life. A professional trainer, Candace showed horses and taught kids how to ride. She filled every moment with laughter and loved her family dearly. When someone has an accident, sometimes all people see is the resulting injury, but every person has a lifetime of stories that deserve to be told. I’m proud to honor Candace and share her story through our participation in Tony’s Turkey Trot. In addition to running with my family and our team, Wolf Retirement Navigation will be the lead sponsor of the event. professional before making any investment decision. Last year, nearly 1,800 runners signed up for the race, but due to bad weather, only 600 people ran that morning. This year,
we’re looking at more than 2,000 participants; and, with any luck, everyone will be able to run. If you want to support a great cause — or just earn that extra piece of pie at your Thanksgiving meal — you can register for Tony’s Turkey Trot until Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2018, by visiting TonysTurkeyTrot.com . If you can’t participate in the run but want to join the cause, there are a number of volunteer opportunities still available. And, of course, any donation is greatly appreciated. I would love to see everyone out there having a great time and sharing the stories of people who are no longer able to tell their own stories themselves.
Yours In Service and Friendship,
