responsibilities to teaching and/or conduct on-going scholarly activities in the area of medical, graduate, or undergraduate education. INSTRUCTOR Appointment as Instructor is generally for individuals who have recently completed training programs and are just beginning their independent professional careers. ASSISTANT PROFESSOR Appointment, reappointment, or promotion to the Assistant Professor level is based on the candidate's educational and professional background, recommendations from colleagues/peers, and the candidate's potential for developing, sustaining and ultimately leading a teaching portfolio consistent with the educational needs of the department and/or Unit. In general, assistant professors at the time of initial appointment may have completed two or more years of postdoctoral or fellowship training, published papers in quality journals and/or demonstrated evidence of other scholarly activity in education (such as a substantial teaching training during graduate or post-graduate training). This may be supported by an educational portfolio with documentation of evaluations and educational activities. ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR Candidates for appointment, reappointment, or promotion to Associate Professor have fulfilled the expectations described for appointment to Assistant Professor. Candidates for appointment or promotion to Associate Professor must also demonstrate that they have integrated outstanding teaching into their practice of medicine at all levels. It is expected that faculty at this level will have noteworthy contributions to teaching as evidenced by a several of the following (supported by an educational portfolio with documentation of evaluations and educational activities). 1. Recognition as an excellent teacher/mentor of medical, graduate and/or undergraduate students, residents, fellows, faculty or continuing medical education participants as documented by formal evaluation bytrainees. 2. Outside recognition of teaching/mentoring excellence as demonstrated by local and regional invited lectures and by teaching symposia, conferences, workshops, faculty development programs, professional society programs and continuing educational courses. 3. Active participation in development of educational programs, curricular offerings and innovative teaching materials (including web-based syllabi, case discussion materials and evaluation tools) and securing local funding for suchprograms. 4. Participation in the application for external training grant funding or integral participation as an educator in funded trainingprograms.
