DEPARTMENT OF OTOLARYNGOLOGY – HEAD AND NECK SURGERY WORKLOAD DOCUMENT APPENDIX TO COLLEGE OF MEDICINE FACULTY GUIDELINES

The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery has approved and will follow the College of Medicine Faculty Guidelines for Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure. This Appendix serves to apply these guidelines more specifically to our department. Department Mission The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery will provide unparalleled education and training to healthcare professionals, students, residents and fellows; will continue to promote clinical excellence with a commitment to public health issues; and provide a fertile academic and scholastic environment to pursue basic and clinical research.

Statement of Departmental Responsibilities

Notwithstanding the University’s policy on collateral employment, it is expected that full time faculty members in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery work a minimum of 40 hours a week. It is recognized that a number of faculty members devote many additional hours to their duties and that there exists great flexibility for individuals on various tracks in terms of time, place and manner of job performance. Responsibilities fall generally in the following three categories: • Research Activities such as bench research, preparation of peer-reviewed publications, reports and presentations and writing research grant applications. • Service Activities Activities such as direct patient care, departmental administration, College/University administration, manuscript and grant review, and involvement in local, national and international service-related organizations.

• Teaching Activities

Direct teaching, such as formal lectures and preparation for these lectures, small group and individual teaching, bedside teaching and indirect activities such as serving on curriculum committees, reading and advising on master’s and Ph.D. thesis.
