Emphasis upon these will vary from track to track as described in the College of Medicine’s criteria for appointment, reappointment, promotion and tenure of faculty and the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery’s appendix to this document.

It is strongly recommended that the application process for promotion not be started until the faculty member has been at their current faculty academic level for a full 5 years in the case of applying for promotion to Associate Professor and for a full 7 years when an Associate Professor candidate applies for promotion to the Professor level. All faculty members requesting promotion and / or tenure must first meet with the department ARPT committee chairman or another member of the department ARPT committee a minimum of 30 days in advance of submitting one’s dossier if applying for promotion and/or tenure. It is strongly encouraged the faculty member fulfill this requirement when they first start to consider promotion and/or tenure and before updating his or her dossier.

TENURE TRACKS

Scholars in the Tenure Tracks have demonstrated excellence in basic or clinical research, teaching and/or have notable expertise in the care of patients or in the evaluation of diseases and therapy. Active participation in the teaching/training programs of the department or discipline is essential and contributions to the service/administrative aspects of the department and/or programs are valuable. With rare exceptions, faculty appointed in the tenure track have a doctoral degree and post-doctoral training. In the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, faculty appointed to the Tenure Track have competed doctoral studies in medicine or the basic sciences. Academic rank reflects the individual’s educational background and training, primary interests and commitments, and experience and accomplishments. The ascending order of rank parallels increasing qualifications: Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor.

Tenure Track: Clinical Investigator/Scholars Track

As clinical scholars, these individuals are expected to approach clinical problems as a mechanism for study which will lead them to investigation in one or several areas of clinical research. They will share the knowledge or expertise gained from these studies by
