expected including development and organization of new and innovative teaching or evaluation methods, directorship of residency or medical student programs, coordinators of sub-specialty rounds and clinical activities, as well as participation on departmental, college and national education committees. Contributions to the intellectual community with the department, the college or nation are expected through interactions with colleagues, residents, fellows, and students. Individuals reaching the Associate Professor level should have published approximately 20 publications in peer reviewed journals, although the quality of the research and publications given greater weight than the quantity. Authorship as 1 st , 2 nd or senior author is given great weight. It is expected that the individual will continue his/her contributions to scholarly pursuits in their area of expertise at the level of senior author in such noted peer reviewed journals as Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and Archives of Otolaryngology or in journals of equal stature and quality. Evidence of the development of an ongoing, productive program of focused clinical investigation and in-depth studies on groups of patients which add significantly to medical knowledge are appropriate and are supportive evidence of clinical scholarship. Case reports are acknowledged, but by themselves are not sufficient evidence of a scholarly focus. The quality of the research will be guided by several principles including the research of clinical question, appropriateness of research design and methodology use in obtaining data, the analyses used, the clarity of the writing, the timeliness of the subject, the length of time required to obtain essential data necessary for publishing significant results and other appropriate criteria. Associate Professor should inspire others toward independent scholarly research activities through work with residents, fellows, medical students and colleagues on collaborative projects or as mentors in a variety of other settings. Involvement in the administrative aspects of research such as organization and direction of research programs is expected as well as participation as a co-investigator or consultant on major grants with other principal investigators. Programs which result in funding from external sources are commendable. Clinical scholars at the Associate Professor level should have reached local, national and regional recognition of clinical expertise and are expected to participate in a wide variety of clinical seminars, courses and symposia as speakers. In addition, it is expected that the individual has accepted and is active in leadership roles in local and national professional organizations as well as participation on departmental, hospital, college, university, and national committees relating to clinical care and service.
