(4), Kevin Currie (6) drew the short straw having to play Phillip and Michael in what were tight games. Sebnem Kaya (8) and Ian Davidson (6) had notable victories in the singles games. Mike Grossmith (6) and Stephen Webb (5) also contributed to Watford’s second place. Real de Golf Pedrena finished 3rd in the group by beating the team from Switzerland 10-0. After two days of play Watford A and Reigate Priory qualify to enter a ‘Championship Heat’ in 2027. We were fortunate the weather stayed kind to all the competitors for the duration of the weekend, if a little warm! Thanks must go to Simon Hathrell the tournament manager for impeccably organising the two heats. We are also grateful for everyone who stepped up as referees and in particular Jason Carley, a championship referee who had a couple of tricky situations to adjudicate on, bearing in mind some language difficulties! Also, recognition for the efforts of the club volunteers led by the Club Chair, Janet Lewis for ensuring the catering for lunches and teas ran smoothly and to members who helped set up and take down the lawns, which overall led to an enjoyable experience for all competitors.
The blue block comprised Watford A, Phyllis Court, El Tiro and Hove Beach. Watford were represented by Nick Archer (-1), Kevin Connolly (0), Eddie Chung (1) and Geoff Johnson (2) and proved to be a formidable team over the weekend. Watford beat Phyllis Court 9-1, El Tiro 8-2 and Hove Beach 10-0. Nick Archer was the standout player for Watford winning all of his matches. A special mention for Oscar Marin Valverde from El Tiro who won two of his games against Watford. Hove Beach was a relatively inexperienced team who nonetheless thoroughly enjoyed their matches against tough opposition and who will be all the better for the experience, particularly Caroline Mulliner and Amanda Collier, who belied their handicaps and made their opponents fight hard The yellow block was Watford B, Real de Golf Pedrena, Croquet VS ‘B’ and Reigate Priory, who were the form team on paper, comprising Philip Davies (1), Michael Bye (1), Douglas Dykes (3), Jean Ryan (6) and Derek Ryan (6). Reigate edged Watford B 6-4 in a close fought match which proved decisive in deciding the outcome of this block. Cengiz Kaya for their wins! Phyllis Court put in a strong team performance and finished second in their heat.
