When I qualified as a Grade 1 GC coach in 2017, part of the qualification course included a presentation session on angled hoop running. This gave me a chance to show off my first visual aid - a one yard long strip of white vinyl exactly 92mm wide, rounded at one end with a black centre line. It was designed to show the aiming line for hoop running. The guide proved so popular that when I went home that evening I had an order to produce five replicas to pass on to my fellow coaches the next morning! Seeing the aiming line with the aid of the guide clearly shows the path a successful attempt should take. The rounded end of the ‘aiming guide’ shows how a cleanly struck ball should bounce off the far upright of the hoop. Soon after this I looked at how a variety of visual aids could be used as coaching tools to help understand a variety of objectives in interesting, informative, and memorable ways. Importantly, to help concentrate the mind. I added small, coloured cones, 400mm training
rings and rubber discs to my kit. These are all aids that can be seen on school playing fields, sports grounds, the village green and are readily available online.
Here Rob Harper (Sussex County CC) and Phil Taylor (Tunbridge Wells CC) are using cones, rings and pads during a coaching session. Although I am a GC coach, there are many ways that these aids can be used for AC – ratios (pads), roquets (tethered balls) and spit shots (rings). Rings for Positioning
400mm diameter rings are available in a variety of colours, and I mainly use these for students to accurately position balls – 7-yard, 14-yard and 21-yards.
The rings shown in the photo above are set up at hoop 1 in Stephen Mulliner’s ‘Fan of Success’ and clearly illustrate that aiming to a position nearest the hoop offers 1 chance of successful positioning – the next row back offers two chances- then three chances and so on.
