LESLIE TEASDALE 2 MARCH.1935 – 29 MAY 2026 Members at Southwell Croquet Club were saddened to learn of the recent passing of their Honorary President - Leslie Teasdale. It all began in 1987 when Newark and Sherwood D.C had the idea that a local Croquet Club might be a popular sporting activity. It organised a public meeting and published an open invitation to interested persons. About 60 people turned up. The meeting agreed that such an activity would be welcomed and NSDC agreed to set the ball rolling. As a result some playing activities were organised and some Leader’s emerged. These were Leslie and Mr and Mrs S Howells who lived in Southwell. The Howells’ property had a wide rear park land of a couple or so acres with an abandoned tennis court area and this was turned into a croquet lawn. Leslie was appointed Chair of the new Club. After a couple of years, members wanted to play more regularly so Leslie set out to find the Club new premises. After consideration of several options, The Arthur Radford Sports Ground at Morton had rough ground available alongside its tennis court that was part used for bowling practice with a bowling alley. It was agreed that the bowling alley could be removed to make a space for a croquet lawn, and space was available to store equipment. The Club decided that this was a more suitable place to be its ‘home’. Leslie and his wife Jill both played AC and together they hosted many Wine & Cheese events following Club competitions.
Leslie remained the Chairman until 2003 when he stepped down as Chair. Leslie stopped playing croquet in 2019 but maintained a keen interest in the activities of the Club: attending many of the events held, particularly the Christmas lunches. In 2025 he was able to present the trophy to the winners of our Trent Valley Trophy event held in June that year. Sadly, towards the end of 2025 he suffered a fall which severely affected his mobility,
eventually leading him to enter a nursing home. Leslie will be sadly missed both as a supporter of the modern Club and as the inspiration behind the founding Club.
