THERE’S ALWAYS ANOTHER MOUNTAIN What I’ve Learned About Setting Business Goals

Once I got my marketing efforts in a good place, I discovered I needed more staff to help us handle the additional business. Hiring was only one part of the equation. Another challenge was understanding and relating to my team and learning how to meet their needs. It’s the difference between keeping and losing good staff, and the process took time. This May, we had our busiest week ever at the clinic. It was an incredible feat, but it’s also evidence that my journey as a business owner isn’t ending anytime soon. There’s always more to do and learn. When I first started Horizon Physical Therapy, I imagined there was a mountaintop. I thought I’d wake up one day and realize I’d accomplished all my goals. But I’ve learned that when I reach one peak, there’s another mountain to climb on the horizon. I don’t think I’ll ever feel like I’ve conquered the summit until I decide to hang up my hat and retire many years into the future. And that’s a good thing. You either grow or stagnate. We should constantly evolve into better and more fulfilled people. Whether the next mountain you tackle is professional, personal, physical, or financial depends on what you want. My

I’ve never been mountain climbing — not technically. But I imagine it’s similar in many ways to running a business. There are peaks, plateaus, loose soil that can make you lose your footing, and times when you want to give up. But with metaphorical mountains, at least, I’ve found that slow and steady wins the race. Imagine showing up to climb a mountain without half the necessary gear, and that’s not too far off from what my first few years at Horizon Physical Therapy were like. I knew how to treat patients, and I had a lot of big ideas on how to run an office. But I didn’t know what I didn’t know. And it turned out that I didn’t know a lot! Some of my biggest challenges centered on marketing. You could say I was naive. I thought telling people who I am and what I do would lead to their walking through my doors. That wasn’t the case. I didn’t understand the importance of consistency in my efforts or how much building a business relies on creating relationships.

I sought expert advice after realizing things weren’t going how I wanted them to. Training with professionals

gave me the skills to make headway into the community. I learned the importance of

approach is to take a moment to enjoy the view when I reach each peak, then determine how I can keep climbing uphill.

differentiating myself. And just as importantly, I realized you must be

willing to ask questions and seek expertise to grow as a business owner.

You’ve heard from your doctors, family, and friends alike how important movement is for individuals as they age. Regular walking is the best way for many older adults to get that daily movement in. 4 MISTAKES NEW EXERCISERS SHOULD AVOID YES, YOUR HOME EXERCISE PLAN MATTERS! SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS

Staying physically active is crucial for our overall health, but starting an effective new exercise routine requires more than a good pair of running shoes. If you’re going to spend your time and effort exercising, you should do it right. New exercisers make many mistakes when starting out; here are four likely to throw you off track. SKIPPING WARMUPS “Walk before you run” is more than just a saying. Immediately breaking into a sprint is terrible

burnout and injury. Be realistic about what you can do without ending up in pain. Your body also needs time to recover between workouts. Take days off or work different muscles on different days so your body can rest. EXPECTING INSTANT RESULTS Rome wasn’t built in a day — and you won’t lose 50 pounds or run a marathon after a month of exercise. It takes time to improve your stamina and lose weight. Remember that the maximum healthy weight to lose is only 1–2 pounds per week; anything more can do more harm than good. Further, slow progress doesn’t mean your exercise program “isn’t working” — though it may pay to mix up your routine. The above mistakes cause many people to give up on healthy habits. Avoid them to prevent potential injury or disappointment. Finally, if you experience pain when exercising or need help creating a plan that works, Horizon Physical Therapy will gladly help you get back on track.

for your body. Your muscles need time to loosen up, so a warmup is essential to any exercise routine. But avoid static stretches you may have been taught in school; a “dynamic” warmup incorporates movement to get your blood pumping and muscles ready for what comes next. AVOIDING WEIGHTS The gym can feel intimidating, and the treadmill looks a lot easier to master than many of the weight machines, so many people stick to cardio only. But it takes more to maintain the strength essential to balance and injury prevention. Further, while many women worry about becoming too muscular, a typical weight program will not create visible biceps. However, weight training does help you burn fat faster! DOING TOO MUCH TOO SOON It’s exciting to start something new, and many people want to prove their commitment and give their new fitness routine their all. But exercising too hard and too long too quickly will lead to

HOW EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES BENEFIT YOUR KIDS UNLOCK A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITIES

possess leadership and teamwork skills. While extracurriculars are not as important as other factors for college admissions, they still play a decisive role in the college’s choice to accept your child.

As children return to school in August, they’ll likely be interested in one or more extracurricular activities. Opportunities both in school and in the community are numerous, such as participating in a local play, joining a school club or sports team, and many others. Extracurricular activities are perfect for getting kids out of the house, but these ventures will also help them gain valuable experiences along with these three benefits. IMPROVES SOCIAL SKILLS One of the biggest concerns parents have had since we experienced lockdowns during the pandemic is that their children struggle to communicate with others. Most of these kids were away from their peers for a year or more, which weakened their social skills. Participating in an extracurricular activity gives your kids a chance to communicate with others outside of a school setting. They’ll learn how other people think and how to best respond to certain situations. BOLSTERS COLLEGE APPLICATIONS If your child wants to attend college after high school, joining a club, team, or organization will give them a leg up on other candidates. College admissions officers love to see students who participate in extracurricular activities because it shows they are involved in their community and

HELPS THEM DISCOVER THEIR PASSIONS There are countless examples of kids discovering their true passion through participating in extracurricular

activities. Your child might not become a professional athlete, but they might discover an alternate career path, like becoming

a physical therapist or personal trainer by playing a sport. If your kid likes animals, they might

find a prospective career path by volunteering at the zoo. If one activity doesn’t appeal to them, try another. Before long, you’ll find the perfect interest for your child.
