Welcome to this edition of The Locksmith Magazine. It’s an exciting time for our industry, with so much happening across the UK locksmithing and security sector. From the countdown to the Locksmith Awards at Doncaster Racecourse to the anticipation building for MLA Expo 2025 in Telford, our calendar is packed with opportunities to celebrate excellence, discover innovation, and strengthen professional connections. In this issue, you’ll find updates on the final chance to vote in the Locksmith Awards, insights into training and skills development, and the latest product launches driving progress in hardware and security solutions. We also shine a light on inspiring individuals, such as those shortlisted for industry awards, and businesses making a difference in their communities. But alongside celebration and progress, we also recognise the challenges we face
as a profession. Rogue locksmiths and misleading online advertising continue to undermine trust and put consumers at risk. As you’ll read, the MLA and wider industry remain committed to tackling this head-on, ensuring professionalism, training, and high standards remain at the forefront of what we do. This issue captures that balance - celebrating the achievements of locksmiths across the UK, while also addressing the issues that matter most to our trade. Whether you are attending the Awards, exhibiting at MLA Expo, or simply looking to sharpen your skills with training on your doorstep, I hope this magazine leaves you inspired, informed, and proud to be part of such a resilient and innovative industry. Enjoy the read, and here’s to an exciting season ahead.

CODELOCKS EXPERT APPOINTED VICE CHAIR TO GAI COMMUNITY HUBS
Codelocks’ sales manager Michelle Saunders has been promoted to Community Hub vice chair by the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI). The move comes in recognition of her expertise, industry knowledge, and ongoing service to the architectural ironmongery community. Having previously been appointed to the position of vice chair for the North Central Hub in 2024, Michelle’s promotion to a national position expands her remit and underscores her expertise and abilities as a knowledge champion and facilitator. In her new role, which she holds alongside her position at Codelocks, Michelle will work closely with GAI members and volunteers to promote the GAI’s wider goals. This includes creating friendly, professional, and supportive regional groups that connect architectural ironmongery professionals and help them to advance their careers. Since 2023, Michelle has been the central facilitator of Codelocks’ training courses, helping locksmiths and other access control specialists deepen their knowledge of Codelocks’ product lines. She has also been the driving force behind Codelocks’ On the Road Locks training, an initiative that makes training accessible to more people by delivering it on-site at various locations in the UK.
Codelocks’ UK Managing Director, Joanne Milne-Rowe, said: “I’m a champion of CPD and a champion of Michelle. She is one of the most knowledgeable people I have the pleasure to work with, and she’s an essential pillar supporting Codelocks’ value of putting customers first. The knowledge, insight and support that she shares with Codelocks’ customers is something that I’m confident the GAI regional community hubs will now also benefit from.” Michelle Saunders commented on her appointment, saying: “Our industry has incredible knowledge and experience that is best shared through face-to-face training and networking, not just online content. I’m eager to push that agenda forward.” “At Codelocks, I’ve worked with a broad range of people, in many roles and in many sectors, and that experience has given me a strong understanding of the skills and approach I’ll need to bring to my new role. It’s a chance to share some of Codelocks’ institutional knowledge with the wider architectural ironmongery community, and I’m keen to get started.” To learn more about Codelocks’ expert training courses and Michelle’s role as a facilitator, visit Codelocks Training.

ROGUE LOCKSMITHS CONTINUE TO DAMAGE OUR TRADE AND TAKE BUSINESS AWAY FROM REPUTABLE LOCKSMITHS
Every day, we receive complaints from members of the public about misleading online adverts and rogue traders charging extortionate fees. In 2021, we went to Parliament asking whether regulation of our industry was required (The full Parliamentary debate, Licensing of Master Locksmiths, is available here:
but it was deemed there was no need due to the robust vetting scheme the MLA has in place. That’s why today we’re focusing on the key enabler of the problem: misuse of search engine advertising. Through the MLA’s Be Part of Something Bigger campaign, progress is being made on this vitally important topic for our industry: Following on from our mention a few months back, members across the UK have written to MPs using our template – and some have
received positive responses. We are now working closely with the Advertising Standards Authority, who recently highlighted the issue publicly, alongside Trading Standards Scotland. We are in contact with the Competition and Markets Authority and key consumer advocates (including the Home Office lead on Fraud Strategy) to strengthen the case for positive change. Our message is clear: rogue locksmiths must be stopped, consumers deserve protection, and only professional locksmiths must be the ones found online. We continue to fight for legitimate locksmiths and against the search engines putting profit over consumer safety. One way, consumers find reputable locksmiths is through our Find a Locksmith tool at www.locksmiths.co.uk. While we know not all trustworthy locksmiths are MLA Approved, this directory is designed to give consumers a reliable, local option – showcasing vetted, inspected, and qualified professionals. It’s our way of helping the public make an informed choice, even in a market where rogue operators exist. Interested in becoming an MLA Approved Company? Join the directory and show consumers that your business meets the highest standards. Together, we can make a difference. Join us – and Be Part of Something Bigger.

Are you or your customers frustrated with doors that are difficult to operate and unlock? Are you making costly site visits to address issues caused by thermal expansion? If you want to eliminate unnecessary service calls for sticky locks, keeps and hinge adjustments while saving time and money, as well as boosting your sales and brand reputation, then AV4 is the solution to smooth operation in the face of thermal expansion. A known industry issue, thermal expansion is a natural phenomenon where materials expand when they are heated, and contract when they cool down. This occurs because heat causes the atoms in the material to vibrate more vigorously, which in turn makes them occupy more space. Thermal expansion can have practical implications on the functionality of all door materials, affecting fit, operation and durability over time. Winkhaus UK, a pioneering force in the door hardware market, has a solution. The newest innovation in autoLocking solutions, AV4, has been designed to directly address these challenges, whilst remaining easy to operate for the widest range of users. AV4: THE TURNING POINT AGAINST THE THERMAL EXPANSION OF DOORS
A dapting to misalignment As a door naturally moves, more force is required to engage the locking mechanism, as the parts no longer align. This means that extra pressure needs to be applied to turn the key, effecting use and functionality for the doorset
and triggering call outs for the installer to investigate. However, AV4 has been designed to address these challenges. With wider installation tolerances built into the lock, AV4 requires up to 70% lower force to operate than competitor auto locks and auto-engaging locking solutions.
George Smith, Technical Manager for Winkhaus UK, explains how AV4 is tested, the results, and the benefits this has for the fenestration industry. George said: “The force
required to retract a locking mechanism can be affected by many factors including the quality of installation, alignment of keeps and door maintenance, temperature and building structure. As these factors fluctuate, so does the potential deviation of a door, necessitating meticulous testing against a stepped increase in tolerance to simulate real-world conditions.” “This imperative assessment aligns with PAS24, the robust security standard governing doorsets and windows, drawing its testing methodology from BS6375-2. Mandating a maximum force of 2Nm for retracting the locking mechanism, with lower force indicating smoother operation, underscores the commitment to fortified security and reliability.” T esting against real world conditions Winkhaus wanted to measure the real-world impact that AV4 can have on a doors ease of use, and invited end-users to test how it operated under thermal expansion compared to other locks on the market. When it comes to thermal expansion, the industry standard tolerance for doors is up to 5mm with a tolerance of +or-2mm being commonplace. To simulate deviation, packers were inserted in 2mm increments with initial measurements used were from the same fabricator and were formed on the same date and batch of manufacture. being take from zero deviation. The doors
For the testing we benchmarked AV4 against the AV2, the current market leading autoLocking solution and a range of competitors products. To start the test, we measured the force required to operate without any packers installed, so zero deviation in the doors used. We expected to see little difference but found that not to be the case with AV4 requiring under 70% less force to operate. All the locking solutions tested met the PAS24 requirement, operating under the required 2Nm force to operate with 4mm packers installed at the top and the bottom of the door. AV4 at this stage required between 36% and 47% less force to operate than the other products tested. Above this point there was a high failure rate with the competitor products tested, and we did not continue testing if locks required more than 2Nm force to operate. AV4 at this point of the testing was only requiring 0.75Nm force, so we continued to increase the number of packers, and therefore deviation of the door. Beyond 4mm deviation only AV2 and AV4 still operated below 2Nm in the sample of products we tested. At 6mm AV4 continued to operate, and again with 8mm of packers installed – double the industry standard and tolerance for door manufacturers. At 8mm AV4 required only 1.54Nm of force to operate, lower than
any other lock we have tested, whilst remaining easy to operate from either key or thumbturn. E nhanced user experience AV4 offers significant advantages for fabricators and installers, as it is able to work in situations where other locks might not perform due to its low force to operate. Not only does this reliable locking solution reduce the need for costly replacements over time, but it also minimises the lost time and expense associated with frequent maintenance visits, enhancing the reputation and profitability of fabricators and installers within the industry. For homeowners, the AV4 offers user- friendly operation, ensuring ease of use for individuals of all ages and abilities. Its low force to operate allows accessibility to everyone, including those with disabilities that affect their ability to grip or apply force to other locking solutions. Additionally, the longevity and reliability of AV4 means that occupants can enjoy the convenience of a single, dependable locking solution throughout their tenure - from children to grandparents - promoting a sense of continuity and supporting the requirements of the future home’s initiative.
autoLock AV4 The Turning Point Against Thermal Expansion
Thermal expansion causes more than frustration, it leads to operation issues, costly callbacks and disappointed end-users. autoLock AV4 is the turning point. It’s precision autoLocking system delivers consistently low operating force whatever the weather. Even as doors expand or contract, autoLock AV4 keeps working smoothly and securely where others fail. This reliability matters to everyone. Fabricators benefit from fewer returns, installers gain a solution they can fit and forget, and homeowners enjoy a door that operates with ease season after season. AV4 is not just another lock, it is the point where performance problems stop and peace of mind begins.

FROM THE BEAT TO BUSINESS: HOW TWO EX-POLICE OFFICERS BUILT A TRUSTED SECURITY BRAND
Chris Hanson’s journey from patrolling the streets as a burglary unit officer to directing a thriving security business is anything but ordinary. As the founder and managing director of SheffLOCK Ltd, Chris and his father, Kevin, transformed their decades of policing experience into one of South Yorkshire’s most trusted security brands. Their mission was simple: provide a reliable service and accredited security products. A M ission , N ot a C areer “I work alongside my dad, who’s also ex-police, and we’re supported by a brilliant team of 34 staff,” Chris says. “For me, this whole journey has been about applying the discipline, vision, and values I developed in the police force to build something reliable, customer-focused, and genuinely useful.” The path wasn’t what Chris initially planned. Following in his father’s footsteps, he joined the police force and served in the burglary unit. His dad
served for 32 years, and together, they saw firsthand the emotional and financial cost of poor security. “When my dad retired and said, ‘What about locksmithing?’ it wasn’t just a career move—it was a mission,” Chris explains. “We took a leap of faith, attended a five-day course, and stepped into a world we knew little about. But we knew how to solve problems
and communicate with people, skills sharpened on the force. That was enough to get us going.” In 2016, SheffLOCK launched, and the phones started ringing from day one. They haven’t looked back since. B uilding S omething B igger Today, SheffLOCK operates as three businesses under one umbrella, all built around trusted, accredited security services: SheffLOCK Locksmiths: Their core business, offering domestic and commercial locksmith services, along with glazing and repairs for uPVC and aluminum doors and windows. SheffLOCK Security Solutions: A dedicated arm for CCTV, alarms, and security lighting, intercoms, and access control. SheffLOCK Auto Locksmiths: Their rapidly growing division for vehicle security. With 34 employees—including engineers, admin staff, and marketing professionals—SheffLOCK has grown significantly. Twenty of their engineers are on the road every day, securing homes and businesses. Despite the company’s size, Chris remains hands-on. “I’m a business owner, but I’m also a dad to three kids, so my schedule must work around nursery drop-offs, school runs, and bedtime stories,” he says. His day starts at 3 a.m. to clear his inbox and strategize before family life and the business day begin. L essons from the F orce , A pplied to B usiness Chris credits his time in the burglary unit for SheffLOCK’s success. It taught him the true meaning of security, the gaps criminals exploit, and what homeowners truly need to feel safe. This experience is what sets the company apart. “Our unique selling point is simple: we’re ex-police, security-focused, and
customer-obsessed,” Chris states. They only install Sold Secure approved products from trusted brands. “You can’t fit a cheap lock and expect premium results,” he adds. This commitment to quality is reflected in their more than 1,300 five-star Google reviews. Now in its ninth year, SheffLOCK plans to continue its organic growth, expanding coverage and services without sacrificing quality. They are also investing in their people, with an engineer currently preparing for his Master Locksmithing Exam.
N avigating the D igital L andscape
Chris is passionate about marketing and highlights the importance of a diverse strategy. While social media, particularly Facebook, has been a game-changer for the company, he stresses the need to avoid relying on a single platform.
“Have you heard of the Google Slap?” Chris asks. “Digital advertising is powerful, but the pricing is volatile. We’ve seen Google click rates jump from £1 to £5 overnight. That’s why having a broad, multi-channel marketing strategy is key.” A C all for C hange Chris believes the locksmith industry needs more regulation. “There are too many stories of people being ripped off,” he says. “I believe all locksmiths should go through mandatory vetting—
background checks, product training, and standards for how they operate.” For Chris, this isn’t just about locks; it’s about safety. Being featured in a locksmith industry publication is a full-circle moment for Chris and his team. “My dad reads it cover to cover, and our team follows it on social media,” he says. “We’re proud to share our story, not just as a business, but as a family. From a father and son on a five-day course to a team of 34, SheffLOCK was built on trust, service, and the belief that doing things the right way still matters.”
