Kasey, Our New Dental Hygienist, Has Arrived WE PUT THE ‘CARE’ IN CARING MODERN DENTISTRY

Flowers are blooming, birds are singing, and the sun is shining — spring has sprung! It’s finally time to get out and enjoy the warm weather outdoors. Along with spring comes the ideas of rebirth and renewal, and here at our office, we’ve welcomed a new member to our Caring Modern Dentistry family. As you know, we take great pride in our staff — every team member has

“Growing up, I had an amazing dental hygienist, Anne. Not only was she great at her job, but she was kind,” Kasey tells us. “Anne took an interest in my life, cared, and made me feel comfortable. I loved visiting her every six months for my regular cleanings. She played a large role in my decision to enter the dental field.” Along with the inspiration she gained from having an influential role model when she was younger, Kasey’s drive to want to help others and play a significant role in their lives ultimately led her to where she is today. Kasey is excited to come to work every day and urges all of her patients to do the same! “Do what makes you happy,” she tells us. “My patients are the best part of my job. I love meeting new faces, getting to know them, and learning from everyone each and every day, and just like Anne did for me, I hope to be an inspiration for others. I care not only about my patient’s teeth but also their lives and well-being!” “If you haven’t met her yet, you’re in for a treat during your next cleaning — Kasey is sweet as can be!” When Kasey isn’t here at the office, she loves making time to cook, travel, watch movies, and even play video games (how cool!). We are thrilled to welcome Kasey to our Caring Modern Dentistry family. If you haven’t met her yet, you’re in for a treat during your next cleaning — Kasey is sweet as can be!

been hand-selected for their skill, professionalism, and, most importantly, their heart. One of our core values is to deliver the highest quality service for our patients, and we can say that each team member puts our patients and their well-being first. This is why our newest registered dental hygienist, Kasey, fits right in! Even though Kasey has only been part of the team for a few months, it feels like it’s been much longer! Her warm personality, passion for dentistry, and willingness to help others have led her to fit right in — we are proud to call her one of our own. Before Kasey brought her skills to Caring Modern Dentistry, she was a dental hygienist for eight years, but her career in dentistry doesn’t stop there — before that, she was a dental assistant for 13 years!

Spring has arrived! However, rebirth and renewal aren’t the only things in the air. During spring, trees, weeds, plants, and grasses release small grains of pollen into the air to fertilize other plants. Because the pollen is small and light, it travels through the wind and frequently causes allergic reactions. Symptoms of seasonal allergies include congestion, sneezing, coughing, a runny nose, an itchy throat, watering eyes, and irritation in the roof of your mouth. If you’re prone to experiencing allergies all spring long, here are some useful tips to keep them at bay. REDUCE YOUR EXPOSURE. During spring months, keep the windows in your home and car closed. On particularly windy or dry days, avoid spending time outdoors, and do not hang your clean laundry outside to dry. After you have been outdoors, remove your clothing and wash your hair and skin to remove any traces of pollen. Do not cut the grass, pull weeds, or do any gardening. REMOVE POLLEN FROM INDOOR AIR. It’s inevitable that pollen will get inside your home and vehicle. To combat this, utilize your air conditioning or invest Nipping Spring Allergies in the Bud WHEN POLLEN STRIKES

in a certified allergy air filter! A dehumidifier and/or an air purifier will help to lower the pollen spore count in the air.

RINSE OUT YOUR SINUSES. When pollen overwhelms your sinus passages, one of the best things to do is to rinse out your airways. A sinus flush with a saline solution is one of the easiest and most effective ways to eliminate the pollen that irritates your respiratory system. TAKE OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS. After checking with your doctor or health care provider, choose an over-the-counter medication that is right for your symptoms. Medications like oral antihistamines, oral decongestants, and corticosteroid nasal sprays are all beneficial in reducing the effects of seasonal allergies.

“This was my first time at CMD. The facility is modern and well run, with all the latest technology (at least upon my observation). Staff is personable without diminishing a high degree of professionalism, knowledge and efficiency. The dental techs/assistants are the most knowledgeable about dentistry that I have ever met. Looking forward to going to CMD for all my dental needs.” –THOMAS K. “Long story short, I called Caring Modern Dentistry this morning around 9:00 to see if they could fit me for a crown because my regular dentist is closed this week and I start a new job with different benefits next week. They were able to give me an appointment at 11:30 today! Brittany was so helpful answering my billing questions. Amanda, Katie and Dr. Hodges we’re all very caring and professional. I had a great experience! Highly recommend Caring Modern Dentistry.” –ATTICIA B. OUR PATIENTS SAY IT BEST!

biodegradable. Because of this, they can take many years to decompose. Luckily, eco-friendly dental products exist, like biodegradable, compostable, and plastic-free toothbrushes made of bamboo. YOU’LL EXPERIENCE A MORE NATURAL CLEAN. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study has shown how the plastics in non-eco-friendly dental products can negatively

impact the reproductive system of lab animals they were applied to. Studies are still being conducted to see if those chemicals affect humans similarly. In the meantime, choosing environmentally friendly dental products made from mineral clay, sea salt, and plant extracts can help you avoid potentially harmful plastics found in many dental products. Furthermore, many types of mouthwash are made with fake dyes, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and other chemicals. Eco-friendly mouthwashes avoid synthetic chemicals and only contain all-natural and non-toxic ingredients. If you’re interested in purchasing eco- friendly dental products, you can find them at your local supermarket or buy them online. For more information about environmentally friendly brands and items, go online and search for “zero waste” dental products.

dental products? Not only are they good for oral health, but they’re also great for the environment! Here are three reasons to choose eco-friendly products for your oral health. YOU CAN REDUCE PLASTIC WASTE. All the products you use for your oral health routine — toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, and floss — come in plastic bottles and containers. Although it’s recyclable, the plastic in your dental products cannot be recycled — they are sent straight to a landfill or dumped in our waterways. So, look for brands advertising sustainability on the packaging. ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS ARE BIODEGRADABLE. Typical dental products are made with polyethylene and nylon, which aren’t

Remembering the Alamo

Do You Remember the Alamo?

It Was More Than a Movie or Song

“Remember the Alamo” is a phrase that almost every American is familiar with, but do you know why? Most of us probably recognize it from Johnny Cash’s hit song, “Remember the Alamo,” while others remember hearing it in John Wayne’s “The Alamo.” But it’s important to remember the historical significance behind the phrase. The Alamo served as a symbol of resistance for Texans opposed to Mexican rule in the 1830s, and “Remember the Alamo” became the rallying cry as they fought for independence. The Alamo was built in 1718 and served as a Catholic mission intent on converting the indigenous population to Christianity and the Spanish way of life. In 1832, Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna gained control of Mexico and established a dictatorship. This prompted Texas, which previously had belonged to Mexico, to declare independence. Santa Anna stationed Mexican troops within the Alamo, but 200 Texas volunteers captured the fort in December 1835.

On Feb. 23, 1836, Santa Anna led a Mexican force of 2,000– 6,000 men to reclaim the fort. He ordered his men to take no prisoners and proceeded to lay siege to the Alamo for 13 days until Mar. 6. Most of the 200 volunteers at the Alamo were killed, including Davy Crockett, James Bowie, and William B. Travis. The Mexican forces suffered casualties, too, losing between 600 and 1,600 men. The Battle of the Alamo became a symbol of resistance for Texans fighting for independence. In April of the same year, Sam Houston led 800 Texans to San Jacinto (near present- day Houston), where they defeated 1,500 Mexican soldiers led by Santa Anna. The Texans shouted their rallying cry, “Remember the Alamo,” during the battle. With their victory at San Jacinto, Texas gained its independence, and in 1845, became the 28th state of the United States of America. Without the Alamo, there’s no telling if Texas would be part of the U.S. today.
