We Will Never Forget — Freedom Isn’t Free
While my high school days feel far away now, I still remember anxiously awaiting graduation like yesterday. Early on in my high school career, I knew college wouldn’t be an option for me — my family’s financial situation wouldn’t allow it, and I was okay with that. Honestly, I was working at a supermarket, managing a meat department, more than attending school anyway. If you know me, you’ll know work is my ultimate passion, so the fact that I was investing more of my time into my job shouldn’t surprise you. Nowadays, my wife jokes that my hobby is work. But there is always some truth behind every joke, and when she pokes fun at me for that, she isn’t wrong — I love what I do.
However, when it was the Marines’ turn to give their presentation, they looked spiffy and well-put-together, and at 17, that was enough for me to enlist right then and there. I spent nine years in the Marines. I was on active duty for three years and in the reserves for another six years. I met some amazing people and formed some friendships that have lasted a lifetime. In fact, my very best friend is a Marine. Because I grew up and entered adulthood in the Marines and saw many amazing, terrifying, crushing, exciting, and gut-wrenching things, I always say the Marines molded me into who I am today. Because of that, the branch and experience hold a special place in my heart. Each May, when Memorial Day rolls around, I reflect on my time serving this amazing country we are fortunate enough to call home. Some of the stories I hear hit very close to home for me, and it’s with honor and respect that I memorialize all those brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for our freedoms in the United States. As the saying for the Marines goes, Semper Fidelis — Latin for “always faithful.” This month, I am faithful to the individuals who lost their lives serving our country and to their families who go on to remember and honor them just as they died, honoring and protecting the flag of the United States of America. God bless America.
“The Marines molded me into who I am today.”
As graduation approached, on one day when I was actually present at school, military recruiters arrived to pitch their branch to all of us wide-eyed kids with our lives ahead of us. As I sat and listened to the presentation, one thing struck me: All the uniforms looked sloppy and messy. In fact, they looked like a bunch of ne’er-do-wells. Their shoes weren’t shined, and their brass wasn’t polished.

INTRUDERS FLEE FROM LUDWIG THE PIG A Ham-Fisted Attempt at Robbery
On the night of New Year’s Eve in 2014, a group of burglars experienced the fright of a lifetime. Expecting to rob a quiet home in Derby, England, the intruders instead came face to snout with Ludwig, a 240-pound potbellied pig. Abandoning all thoughts of crime once they spotted the pig, the burglars instantly fled the scene and ran for their lives. The “hero ham” had already become a popular figure in his town and was well-loved for his gentle demeanor. In fact, Michael Maughan, Ludwig’s owner, is confident that Ludwig wouldn’t have harmed the intruders, even if he does look quite intimidating. Local officers believe the robbers must have heard Ludwig’s Rottweiler-like “growl” and immediately hit the road, leaving the door wide open behind them. The story of this heroic potbellied pig became a sensation throughout Europe. Countless fans have applauded the Canadian-born hog for his loyalty to his owners. But the owners want to ensure people
understand that Ludwig would never hurt anyone. Some fabricated web stories made Ludwig sound more dangerous than he is, so Maughan spoke to the Toronto Star to dispute any defamations against Ludwig’s kindness. “He’s being painted as a vicious creature when he’s actually quite a sweet animal,” he explained. “He didn’t exactly bare his tusks and charge, I don’t think. I think he got absolutely, ‘Arrgh,’ and they just ran for it.” In fact, Maughan detailed that after a two- month separation during their move to England, the pig shed tears during their reunion. Adorable and affectionate, Ludwig would have probably become friends with the intruders in no time. Even if his “bark” is worse than his bite, Ludwig succeeded in keeping his owners safe while also protecting their home. This 240-pound potbellied pig continues to enjoy his comfortable home in Derby and is considered a town hero. Anyone looking for a guard dog may want to consider a hefty hog instead!
IT CAN BE HEALTHY! FAT IS NOT EVIL
2. They reduce inflammation. Omega-3s, a polyunsaturated fat, have anti-inflammatory properties that can help your body heal faster. No matter how much exercise you do, combatting inflammation with your diet is beneficial. Omega-3s can even be taken as fish oil supplements if you can’t work it into your diet. However, just be careful not to consume too much, as omega-3s can become fattening when consumed in excess.
Everyone wants to be fit and trim, and many avoid all fats because of this. However, healthy fats are vital for aging bodies. Fat keeps your brain functioning optimally, provides energy, and helps your body absorb minerals and vitamins to maintain your health. When making dietary choices, it’s important to remember that healthy fats are your friend and, when consumed in the recommended amounts, will not lead to weight complications.
What are healthy fats? Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats help our bodies feel full and work to slow down the digestion of carbohydrates. These fats improve blood glucose and insulin levels, lower LDL cholesterol, and keep our heart healthy. Also, eating healthy fats is easy — they’re in tuna, salmon, flaxseed, chia seeds, eggs, avocados, nuts, olive oil, yogurt, and tofu. Why are healthy fats vital as we age? 1. They aren’t fattening fats. When you think of fats, your mind likely immediately turns to weight gain. However, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, when consumed in proper amounts, help with fat loss and maintaining a healthy weight. To trim down, eliminate unhealthy saturated and trans fats from your diet instead. Trans fats are those that are partially hydrogenated and are common in processed foods.
3. They boost brain function. Healthy fats play an essential role in our brain function and development. Your brain is roughly 60% fat, and it’s important to note that your brain cells rely on a steady supply of good fats to operate correctly. 4. They provide energy. Healthy fats combat fatigue and provide your body with energy. When we consume omega- 3s, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats, our body absorbs them and converts each calorie into energy for our cells to function.
So, remember when you’re planning your meals for the week: Good fats keep you healthy!

When most people think of anxiety, they likely have negative connotations tied to it. Many make the assumption that anxiety will always lead to panic attacks and fears of major change, but just about anything can generate feelings of anxiety, and not all of them are harmful. However, if your anxiety stops you from doing something, it can hinder you almost every day. 3 Strategies to Reduce Anxiety THE WORLD ISN’T ENDING
Take a Break
SALMON CROQUETTES WITH DILL SAUCE Inspired by Epicurious.com
In honor of May being National Anxiety Month, here are three ways to reduce your anxiety.
Daily Exercise Physical activity can increase your self-confidence, improve your mood, help you relax, and lower anxiety symptoms. You don’t have to do anything significant — you can go for a walk, take a hike, conduct at-home workouts, go to the gym for at least 30 minutes, or participate in yoga and Pilates. Meditate Sometimes, taking a step back, focusing on your breathing, and letting your thoughts flow in one ear and out the other can help you put things in perspective. JAMA Internal Medicine published an article stating that practicing mindfulness can help ease feelings of anxiety, depression, and pain. You can meditate by following a guided meditation or silently sitting in a quiet area and breathing slowly. While meditating will be challenging at first, it will become easier with practice. Face Anxiety Head-On Many people try to avoid anything that could make them feel anxious. While this method may make you feel short-term comfort, it can cause you to be more anxious about specific scenarios. The best strategy to overcome anxiety is to face it head-on. Although it will be uncomfortable and challenging, don’t let it stop you! The more you put yourself out there, the less anxious you’ll feel. You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for! Please contact your health care provider if you’re worried about the anxious feelings you get. They can assist you with identifying your triggers, why anxiety is occurring, and methods you can use to reduce your symptoms.

If you’ve ever planned a vacation, you’ve probably picked a few key places to visit, like a museum, restaurant, or historic site. However, a new vacation trend is becoming increasingly popular: sleep tourism, where a traveler plans their entire vacation to get the best quality sleep during their time away. Before, common goals for vacations were to eat delicious foods, stay up late to see the sights, and fit in as much activity as possible. However, this left travelers completely exhausted. And as our culture continues to understand how important sleep is to our health, more people are prioritizing rest even while they’re away. But being a sleep tourist is about more than going to bed early and ensuring you get your recommended eight hours of rest. It’s about building your vacation around sleep. Some hotels even offer rooms tailored to sleep tourists, with amenities so popular that their sleep options have become regular offerings.
AI to facilitate sleep. The room touts an intuitive “Restorative Bed,” which adjusts to relieve pressure points and controls climate temperature throughout the night, according to each person’s needs.
