USPA Welcome United States Polo Association

The United States Polo Association is an association of polo clubs and their members. Tinicum Park Polo Club epitomizes the grassroots club level polo, supported by dedicated club leadership and a cohesive membership that serves as the bedrock of our association. Since its founding in 1993, Tinicum Park Polo Club has continued to thrive and grow to become the largest club in the Eastern Circuit during a period that has seen many other USPA polo clubs open and later close. Tinicum Park Polo has provided hundreds of new and veteran polo players with a great polo experience. With its own location in proximity to major metropolitan areas, players from all over have experienced polo in Bucks County. Tinicum Park Polo has produced members who have competed all along the east coast, throughout Florida, and even internationally. Growing the sport of polo requires committed individuals to introduce the sport to beginners and cultivate their experience. Hesham El-Gharby, a passionate founder and Club Manager, has been that person at Tinicum Park Polo Club for a generation of polo players. His dedication to the club and the sport should be applauded.

A M ESSAGE FROM THE T INICUM P ARK P OLO C LUB P RESIDENT

Dear Tinicum Park Polo Fans and Supporters,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, volunteers and our Playing and Social Members, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 28th Season of the Tinicum Park Polo Club. For almost three decades, the Tinicum Park Polo Club has enjoyed the extraor- dinary opportunity to play at Tinicum Park in Bucks County and provide fun and exciting entertainment for all. We are proud that Tinicum Park Polo has become a model for many others and is recognized by the United States Polo Association (USPA) as one of the largest clubs on the East Coast. We are especially grateful that Bucks County Parks continues to work closely with us to keep our Saturday polo matches open and safe in these pandemic-challenged times. As of this writing we may still have some capacity limitations, require groups to socially distance from each other, and require face masks when walking

between groups. With these procedures in place we were able to fully complete our 2020 season after only a four-week opening delay, and so with everyone’s compliance with our 2021 guidelines we’re looking forward to completing our full slate of matches this year. Tinicum Park Polo Club is unlike any other polo club. We take great pride in our collaborative and inclusive member- ship. Tinicum Park Polo began in 1993 when its founders began to play on this beautiful field along the Delaware River in Erwinna, Pennsylvania. What began as a “let’s try it and see” arrangement with the Bucks County Park System has blossomed into a 28-year partnership, now recognized as one of the county’s prime attractions for locals and tourists alike. We look forward to seeing you at our regularly scheduled Saturday games, USPA Tournaments, as well as our upcoming special events. The founding principle of Tinicum Park Polo Club has been to make the sport accessible to all – from those just getting started to more seasoned and professional players of all ages; and to make our match days a delightful experience for our social members, avid fans and families, tourists, and sponsors. We take great pride in our Club and are very grateful for your continued patronage and support. The Board of Directors and I also wish to express our yearly thank-you to Hesham El Gharby, Club Manager and a founder, for all of his hard work and expert stewardship of Tinicum Park Polo Club for over 28 years now. Wishing you all a great season. See you at the field!

Respectfully,

Barclay Knapp President

Quick Facts: v Polo is a ball sport, played on horses.

T HE O RIGINS of Modern Day Polo “Let others play at other things. The king of games is still the game of kings.” - 16th Century Stone Tablet in Gilgit, Pakistan

v The field is the largest field in any organized sport. v Each polo match is divided into 7 minute chukkers. v In outdoor polo there are 4 players on a team. v Handicaps in polo range from -2 to 10 "goals." v Two mounted umpires referee the game. v The rules of polo are centered around safety.

Polo is arguably the oldest recorded team sport in known history, with the first matches being played in Persia over 2500 years ago. Initially thought to have been created by competing tribes of Central Asia, it was quickly taken up as a training method for the King’s elite cavalry. These matches could resemble a battle with up to 100 men to a side. As mounted armies swept back and forth across this part of the world, conquering and re-conquering, polo was adopted as the most noble of pastimes by the kings and emperors, shahs and sultans, khans and caliphs of the ancient Persians, Arabs, Mughals, Mongols and Chinese. It was for this reason it became known across the lands as "the game of kings.” British officers themselves re-invented the game in 1862 after seeing a horsemanship exhibition in Manipur, India. The game was introduced in England in 1869 and in America by 1876. The United States Polo Associ- ation was established in 1890 to coordinate games, standardize rules and establish handicaps. Polo is now played around the world in over 75

countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. In 1998, the Federation of International Polo was established. Polo continues as it has done for so long, to represent the pinnacle of sport and reaffirms the special bond between horse and rider. The feeling of many of its players is epitomized by a famous verse inscribed on a stone tablet next to a polo ground in Gilgit, Pakistan: "Let others play at other things. The king of games is still the game of kings.” n

R ULES & P OSITIONS “The game has been and always will be played by men and women who possess a zest for adventure and challenge. More important, polo has been and always will be characterized by the athleticism and beauty of the horse.” - Museum of Polo

POSITION 1 The #1 position requires a player with the accuracy and confidence to score. This is the #1’s offensive job. This player must have a fast, steady horse in order to beat the opposing #4 to the ball and stroke it into the goal. POSITION 2 This player is often called the ‘sparkplug’ of the team. As an attacker the #2 player is the most aggressive offensive player on the team. The #2 player marks the opposing #3 player and keeps this player from turning the ball. POSITION 3 The #3 player is the quarterback of the team and usually the most versatile. This offensive and defensive player must act quickly and always think a play ahead. As a playmaker, his responsibilites are to turn the opponent’s attack around and direct his team’s offensive drive with strategic, well-placed passes. POSITION 4 The #4 position requires a deliberate approach, yet leaves nomargin for error. Player #4 must keep himself/herself between the goal and the attacking #1.

Most of the rules in polo center around the concept of the “line of the ball,” the imaginary line created by the path of the ball. This line corresponds to the center line of the road, with lanes on either side for opposing players. A player may not cross this line without first riding off or bumping the opponent to the other side. The “line” exists to allow a horse and rider to gallop at high speeds after the ball without meeting another moving player head on or running into another one crossing the rider’s path. The “hook” is an effective defensive maneuver, yet it may not be executed higher than the height of a horse or across the back of the opponent’s horse. Players may not approach for a bump at a severe angle. Two mounted umpires patrol the game as close to the action as possible, penalizing players for moves that create dangerous situations for horse or player. A third official (third man) watches from the sidelines to make the call if the two umpires are in disagreement. n

T HE H ISTORY of Tinicum Park Polo Club Established 1993

“To play polo and to watch polo is to experience an elemental excitement that is rarely matched in other sports.”

- Pimm’s Book of Polo

The beginnings of Tinicum Park Polo Club are modest ones. The founders - polo players and enthusiasts, met at a local restaurant to hone out the necessary rudiments of organizing a Polo Club. In 1993, having initially received permission to use the local public park as a field, this groundbreaking group began its first official season. Five games were played the first year. Officially registered with the United States Polo Association (USPA) in the fall of 1993, Tinicum Park Polo Club held its first publicly recognized USPA game on June 4, 1994. Today the club’s season is 20 weeks long with matches every Saturday, including 5 USPA tournaments. Tinicum Park Polo Club has been honored with the designation as the largest club in the USPA’s Eastern Circuit. This achievement has been possible due to the key philosophy of its founders - to foster accessibility of the sport of polo to all. To date, the club is proud of welcoming an all inclusive membership which includes players from all backgrounds and skill levels. The club was built on the dedication of both volunteers and players. Each season the group combined its resources and continued to grow. Within three years the Tinicum Park Polo Club players roster went from fifteen to over forty. The club was then restructured to include a Board of Directors. Continued development has included a youth division, creating opportunities for players as young as twelve years old. Thousands of spectators gather to experience this thrilling and elegant event, making Saturday games a valuable, local attraction for the entire Bucks County region. The club’s seasonal schedule includes signature and charitable events. Celebrating 28 Years! 2018 marked the important milestone of 25 years of continued operation from its present location. This achievement makes it unique among its circuit members. And, unlike any other club, it combines the elegance and style of a truly majestic sport while being supported by an inclusive membership from diverse backgrounds and all levels of skill. n

G LOSSARY of

ANNOUNCER: Polo is a spectator sport which uses an announcer to communicate to the crowd what is going on in the game. BUMP: A player may ‘ride off’ or bump his opponent off the line of the ball, removing him from play. A bump cannot endanger either horse or rider; the player riding off must be going the same speed and at nomore than a 45 degree angle as the player he is pushing to the side. CHUKKER: The American polo game is divided into six chukkers lasting a maximum of 7 1/2 minutes each. A horn (or bell) is sounded two minutes before each chukker; two horns sound at the time the chukker is to commence, and a single horn sounds to indicate that 30 seconds remain in the chukker. At the end of 7 1/2 minutes of elapsed timed, a horn will sound twice to terminate the chukker.

DIVOT STOMPING: This old time polo tradition encourages spectators to walk onto the field at half time to stomp and place back the small pieces of turf disturbed by the hooves of the horses in the course of play. FIELD: The outdoor polo field is 300 yds. long and 160 yds. wide, larger than nine football fields. When polo is played in an indoor arena, unlike outdoor polo, which is played on a 10-acre field, arena polo is played on a 300 ft. by 150 ft. field, enclosed by walls of four or more feet in height. FOUL: A foul or penalty is an infringement of the rules. The umpires blow their whistles at a foul, the time stops , and a free hit is allowed by the team which was fouled. The time starts again when the fouled player swings at or hits the ball.

P OLO T ERMS

GOAL: Polo is based on trying to score the most goals by hitting the ball through the goal posts of the defending team. After a goal is scored the teams return to the center of the field for a throw in, switching directions so that each team defends alternate goals after each score. GOAL JUDGES: Each set of goal posts has a goal judge who holds a flag up when a goal is scored and waves the flag in a downwardmotion when the ball goes wide of the goal posts. HANDICAP: Polo players are assigned a handicap, between -2 to 10 goals. This reflects their theoretical worth to their team and is not related to how many goals they may make in a game. A -2 is an absolute beginner, and 10 goals is the highest a player can be rated. The handicaps of the four players on a team are added to create the team handicap.

HOOK: In a defensive move, a player may hook or strike the mallet of the opponent to keep them fromhitting the ball. A player may not ‘cross hook,’ which is reaching over, under or across his opponent’s horse, or ‘high hook,’ a hook above the shoulder of the player in an outdoor game. KNEE GUARDS: Polo is a contact sport requiring equipment which pro- tects the player and horse. Knee guards are leather pads which protect the player’s knees. KNOCK-IN: When the ball goes off the field, over the end line but not through the goal posts, the defending teamwill hit the ball back in from the point it went out. The players on the opposing teammust stand 30 yards or more from the player knocking in until the ball is in play. Continued on page 38

POLO PONY “The polo pony is 85% of the player’s handicap.” - Polo Museum Would you be surprised to learn that polo ponies are, in fact, grown horses? Unlike in any other sport, this equine companion defines the sport of polo and is of signifi- cant importance in the player’s ability to be successful. The ideal polo pony is invaluable to the team, possessing a combination of speed, agility and intelligence. They are well cared for members of the team. The best playing pony at each Tinicum Park Polo Club tournament is recognized for out- standing achievement on the field. n

T HE F IRST W OMAN OF P OLO The first woman to play polo competitively in the United States was Sue Sally Hale. She started her career in the 1950’s when polo was still a gentleman’s sport barring women from the field. To participate in tournaments, Sue Sally disguised herself as a man. She continued this subterfuge for 20 years, until 1972 when she was finally admitted into the United States Polo Association.

“After a game it was a kick to clean up with the parties and mingle unrecognized with the guys I just played on the field.” -Sue Sally Hale

Sue Sally Hale (1937-2003) Photos and content courtesty of: sshale.com By the time she was 11, she knew what she wanted to be - a polo player. The year was 1949. Unfortu- nately for Sue Sally, there was no organized polo for women after WWII, and women weren't allowed to join the all men's United States Polo Association. So

she did the next best thing; she disguised herself as a man to be able to play. Thus began an epic journe,y from hitting rocks across carved - out lots in the Hollywood Hills all the way to Polo's Hall of Fame. Sue Sally Hale went where no woman had ever gone before - Sunday polo. Sue Sally started polo at the Riviera Polo Club in Pacific Palisades, California in the late 1940s under the tutelage of some of the greatest polo players of the day. With no predecessor and no path to follow, she perse- vered, playing regularly up and down the west coast with such legendary players as LeBlanc, Coulter, Skene, Linfoot, Conant, Atkinson, Jason, Wooten, Graber, Murray and Howden, campaigning for more than 20 years to be included in the United States Polo Association (USPA). On January 1, 1972 Sue Sally Hale was accepted as a playing member of the USPA, finally eligible to compete in officially sanctioned tournaments. For the next 30 years, she continued to share her enthusiasm and love for the game of polo with everyone she encountered, becoming the top American woman player of her era and polo's famous "Grand Dame," a legend in her own time. Sue Sally was a legendary polo trail blazer who

pushed the boundaries of what was possible, accepted or allowed. She criss-crossed the country opening doors, creating opportunities and propelling the sport of polo forward while inspiring gen- erations who followed. With a career in polo that spanned more than fifty years, she achieved many historic firsts for women in polo, at the same time mentoring and reinforcing the positive role of women as professional players, instructors, managers and organizers. Named one of "Twenty Who Left Their Mark, A Tribute To Those Whose Unique Contributions Shaped American Polo," her accomplishments and contributions to polo were recognized next to such polo legends as: Harry Payne Whitney, James Gordon Bennett, Devereaux Milburn, Cecil Smith, Thomas Hitchcock Jr., John T Oxley, Paul Butler, Northrup Knox, Dr. William (Billy) Linfoot, and Carlton Beal . In addition to her passion for polo, Sue Sally was a competitor, instructor and mentor in several equine disciplines, the mother of five children (Brook, Stormie, Dawn, Sunset & Trails), a volunteer firefighter, an EMT, a community activist, an artist, an author and an award winning poet. n

LINE OF THE BALL: This is one of the most critical elements in polo play. Similar to the line on a highway which keeps cars from crashing into each other, the line of the ball in polo helps delineate the rights of way of the players moving up and down the field, hitting the ball. It is the imaginary line created by the moving ball from the point it was hit to a new position. Players need to be aware of and continually adjust to the changing line. Crossing the line of the ball is a common cause for a foul. MALLET: Also called a stick, it is what the player uses to hit the ball. Most mallets are still made from bamboo just as they were 2,000 years ago. MAN/LINE/BALL: This saying is taught to players learning the game. A player needs to follow this sequence; first knowing where the other team’s players are on the field, then determining where the line of the ball is to avoid a foul by crossing the line, and last to hit at the ball. Players who do not follow this sequence and who simply try to hit the ball are said to be “chasing the ball.” MANAGER: Every polo club needs a manager who organizes the games and runs the club. TPPC’s manager is Hesham El-Gharby. He is also the club Delegate to the USPA. G LOSSARY of Polo Terms Continued

NEAR SIDE: The left side of the horse is the side from which the horse is handled, saddled, mounted and dismounted. A near side shot is on the left side, and since players carry their mallets in their right hands, it requires reaching across the horse to hit the ball. Calling the left side of a horse the ‘near side’ is derived from the days of knights in armor who had to carry swords, which were always held in the right hand, on the left hip, which necessitated mounting and dismounting on the left. OFF SIDE: This refers to off the right side of the horse. The most common shot is the off side forward. PLAYER: A polo player is a person who is engaged in the playing and the lifestyle of the sport of polo. Once considered the ‘Sport of Kings’ when most players were wealthy men, today polo is played by women and men of all ages, backgrounds and economic levels. POLO WRAPS: These long pieces of fabric, usally fleece and measuring about 4 in. wide x 9 ft. long are wrapped around the horse’s lower legs to protect them from being hit by a swinging mallet. Often the polo wraps are in the player’s colors, making for a colorful arrangement of moving horse legs on the field. Continued on page 62

F Roached Mane: Manes are clipped or “roached” to prevent them from getting tangled with the reins and kept out of the player’s face. G Bridle: Leather bridles are customized to fit each pony. The most common bits used in polo are the gag, snaffle and pelham. H Shoes: The proper horseshoes give the pony better traction. I Boots/Wraps: These are used to protect the pony’s legs from the ball and mallet while also providing additional support. J Boots/Knee Pads: Leather boots protect the rider, and knee pads guard against injury in a ‘ride-off.’ K Draw Reins: This second set of reins used for better control extends from the girth through the bridle to the rider’s hands. L Tied Tail: The tail is tied to eliminate interference with the mallet. n

In the game of polo it’s all about safety first, for both the rider and the horse.

A Players: Players are not limited by gender nor age and are rated on a handicap system from -2 to 10, 10 being the best in the world. B Polo Pony: Polo “ponies” are usually thoroughbreds (14.2 to 16.2 hands) selected for their speed, agility, endurance and intelligence. Polo ponies can account for up to 75% of a player’s game. C Polo Ball: The ball is 3” in diameter and made of hard, white plastic that dents after continuous hits. D Helmet: Helmets are required equipment for protection against swinging mallets, flying balls and spills. E Mallet: Mallet lengths range from 49” to 54” to best fit a player’s swing and size of pony. They are constructed of bamboo cane with a tipa wood head.

T INICUM P ARK P OLO ’ S Emerging as a natural progression of the commitment of the young players to polo it took a series of fortunate events for the program to get off the ground. “ ” By Victoria Halliday Tinicum Park Polo Club Introduces I/I Program

PL

The home of the Tinicum Park Polo Team is Azra Equine Club in Allentown, New Jersey. Owned by clubmember and polo player Affan Iftikhar and managed by Hesham El- Gharby. The club’s recent move of its winter arena program to Azra Equine Club was a key factor in the successful start of the I/I program because of the ideal facilities for tourna- ment play. There is an outdoor and indoor arena and accommodations for spectators. The all-encompassing support of parents, an essential ingredient for a youth program to succeed, is no exception to the Tinicum Park Polo I/I Program. Cheryl Arnold, Daniel’s mother has applied her skills for organizing and scheduling games in assembling a full fall schedule of Home and Away Games. A particular challenge with the safety precautions related to COVID 19. Ayesha Chaudhry, Abdullah’s mother, who encouraged her sons to play at a young age, feels the experiences offered in polo provides chances to “seize the moment”. Meaning, it is important to learn to appreciate the fleetingmagic mo- ments that make life special, which is found in abundance in polo. The dedication of the Tinicum Park Polo Board to programs which support the growth of the club resulted in unani- mous votes to approve financial support to the I/I Program. The consistent upward mobility of the 27-year-old Club is due in part to a plan for growth and the future. They have embraced the I/I Program as a means of bring players into the game and supporting young people in learning how to play polo. Jawed BenMoussa joined the I/I Team after hearing about it when he was working at the club. When asked what he looks forward to the most about being on the team he said ”I am looking forward to learning, learning about polo”. Horses, the lifeblood of anything polo, came into play as a piece of the puzzle for the program to come together.

TinicumPark Polo Club in Erwinna, Pennsylvania announces its new interscholastic program and the start of their first I/I Open Polo Team. Initiated for the increasing number of young players in the club, the I/I Team has come together because of the ambition, competitive spirt and comrade- ship of a few young home-grown players. Team Members Owen Halliday 17, Abdullah Chaudhry 15, Jawed BenMoussa 15, and Daniel Arnold 13, have been practicing as a team since early October but have known and played together since an early age. Daniel, Owen and Abdullah are second generation polo players with parents who are long-time members of Tinicum Park Polo Club. Jawed entered the scene via polo lessons. Emerging as a natural progression of the commitment of the young players to polo it took a series of fortunate events for the program to get off the ground. Foremost, enough young players had to become old enough and practiced enough to be eligible to form a high school team. The family friendly atmosphere of Tinicum Park Polo Club helped foster this pursuit by encouraging youth to pick up foot mallets and participate in “kids chukkers’, a chukker for children on a short field at halftime. The club also hires youth to work at the games. Flagging and manning the score board has introduced a few to the field. Owen Halliday and Jawed BenMoussa work at the club as well as play, sometimes doing both the same day. The opportunities the USPA and the PTF offers youth created a horizon of competition, fun and comradeship that came into vision as the years went by. Daniel Arnold, a veteran of I/I Polo has played in the I/I Middle School League for the last few years. Winning the Championship in 2019 at the Aiken Polo Club and being awarded an All Stars in every I/I Middle School Tournament he has competed in, Daniel’s maturing to high school polo was instrumental in having the program at Tinicum Park Polo Club take off.

Picture Left to Right: Jawed Benmoussa, Daniel Arnold, Hesham El-Gharby (coach), Abdullah Chaudhry and Owen Halliday

The program needed an adequate number of polo ponies for the team and the visiting teams to meet the split spring requirements of I/I games. A combination of horses from the Team’s family’s strings and the horses in the club’s arena polo program stepped forward to add interscholastic polo to their careers. Riding an array of horses is one of the opportunities of the I/I program and according to Owen Halliday he, “likes the experience of riding different horses and it is making me a better rider.” These factors aligned with the immeasurable value of a good coach made the long-anticipated youth program

come to life. The passion which Coach Hesham ElGharby, also the Manager of the Club, has for teaching and coaching polo inspires each individual member to work to- gether as a team. When asked how he likes teaching high school players, Hesham explains that he has “always loved teaching and likes any new teaching challenge”. The new Tinicum Park Polo Club I/I Team has begun a fun season of practice and games. They look forward to meet- ing and playing other teams and seeing and playing the members of teams whom they have already gotten to know in the games they have under their belt. n
