M3 AND ME
HOW I FOUND MY CALLING PHYSICAL THERAPY HELPS YOU HEAL
But that all changed in college. For a few years, I was battling some personal issues, and the stress caused my body to ache. I didn’t understand what was happening or why I felt like I did. So, I went to a neurologist for answers. Unfortunately, they didn’t know what was wrong, and it seemed like they tossed me to the side when my neurologist said, “Just go to physical therapy.” I felt defeated and overlooked when I heard my neurologist say that. But I still took their recommendation and went to physical therapy. I’m so glad I did because I had an experience that changed me for the rest of my life. My physical therapist took the time to get to know me, and she truly made me feel like I wasn’t just a patient — that I was a person. She wanted to learn about my life and make me feel comfortable in any way possible. After a few visits, I was confident I could confide in her what I was experiencing personally. My physical therapist took that information and found a treatment option that would help me. After my physical therapy experience in college, a lightbulb went off: I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to become a physical therapist. My doctor impacted my life and showed me how this line of work provides the opportunity I wanted to not only help people with their pain but to help them heal other areas of their lives.
When you think of physical therapy, what comes to mind? Some think about sports injuries, while others think about recovering from surgery or a car accident. No matter your reason for physical therapy, your doctors will impact you in more ways than just reducing your pain — they can help you find your calling. My physical therapist in college helped me realize I wanted to become a physical therapist. It wasn’t the first sign I wanted to be in a field where I could help people. Ever since I was a little girl, I had a passion for helping others. Any chance I had to lend a helping hand, be that shoulder someone could lean on, or become a sounding board for others to talk to, I instantly took it. But because I was so young, I didn’t know how to get to a position where I could help people in a career. So, I had to be patient and see where life took me. In high school, I ran for my track and cross- country teams. I injured myself several times, so I spent a lot of time in physical therapy as I recovered. But I never thought about becoming a physical therapist myself. I thought what they did was cool; however, it never occurred to me to pursue it. At the time, I didn’t realize how much of an impact an individual could have on my life.
From there, I began taking classes in college to help me fulfill my dreams. Then, I started working at M3 PT to receive credit hours and experience in the field. My year and a half at M3 PT has been so eye-opening and showed me that physical therapy is where I belong. I can’t thank my team enough for welcoming me with open arms and helping me improve each day. While I love everyone here at M3 PT and our patients, I will be leaving the last week of April to continue my schooling at San Diego State University to become a physical therapist. I will miss you all very much! Thank you for the wonderful memories — I will always cherish my time here at M3 PT.

THE WORK-FROM-HOME LIFESTYLE
5 Tips to Impress Your Boss Remotely
person speaks volumes about your professional character. Avoid multitasking and dress professionally! Be sure to arrive on time, be prepared, and contribute to the meeting. Avoid Procrastination It’s tempting to get in a quick episode of your favorite TV show or to take a short nap instead of finishing an assignment when you’re working from home — especially when the couch is 15 feet away from you! However, if you want to get and stay ahead while working remotely, you’ll want to do your best work at home. Instead of procrastinating, buckle down and focus! Provide Updates While it’s not a great idea to flood your boss’s inbox with updates, providing quick notes to keep them in the loop on important projects, questions, or concerns is a good idea. Just remember to keep them brief.
Working from home isn’t just a fad — it’s here to stay for many companies and their employees. For those working from home, their bosses frequently reside in a different state entirely. This means putting your skill and efforts on display may be difficult. What are some of the best ways to impress your supervisor when working remotely? Maintain Responsiveness Every supervisor’s main concern with employees working from home is whether or not they are truly putting in their hours. Being responsive is the best way to show you are at the top of your game. This means having your phone on hand, checking your email frequently, and answering pings, texts, and chats. This shows you are reliable and not slacking off on the clock.
Practice Proactivity Proactivity is always better than reactivity. Supervisors look for team members who propose fresh ideas, go above and beyond, and nip problems in the bud before they arise. While working from home, be sure to think outside of the box to get ahead. With these tips, you’re sure to impress your boss and convince them that working from home is right for you!

I DON’T HAVE A CRICK IN MY NECK!
WHIPLASH MAY BE CAUSING THE PAIN
Other signs of whiplash include: •
“Ouch! My neck!” Some of us may have yelled this sentence out loud one day when we feel a crick in our necks. However, while some neck pain can be because of our sleeping or standing position, other times, it can be a sign of a major health condition — like whiplash. What is whiplash? While some may think whiplash occurs mainly after a car accident, it can happen because of a sudden blow to the head if you’re playing contact sports or accidentally fall. Whiplash is an injury due to a sudden and vigorous head movement in one direction. If your head is forced in one direction too quickly, it can affect your muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues in your neck, which can cause overstretching or straining. What are the symptoms? Immediately after straining your neck, you may not feel any pain. But that doesn’t mean you didn’t suffer any injuries! Typically, you begin to feel pain 6–12 hours after the injury. The first day, you may feel slightly uncomfortable. But in the hours or days following the incident, you may notice your pain increasing or swelling and bruising around the injured area. That’s why it’s recommended to visit your doctor immediately after an injury so testing can be done to see if there are any lasting effects.
Neck pain, stiffness, swelling, or tenderness
• •
Difficulty moving your neck side to side or up and down
Headaches or dizziness
• Pain shooting down your back, arms, hands, or shoulders • Trouble swallowing or blurred vision
How can you treat whiplash? Before trying to treat the injury yourself, please visit your health care provider. They will be able to examine what areas were injured and the exact methods to use to help your neck heal fully. Your doctor may suggest several treatment options for you to use, such as icing your injury, improving your posture, adapting your daily activities, or undergoing therapy to help regain movement in your neck. Your health care provider may suggest physical therapy to treat your whiplash. However, it will be beneficial to visit your friends at M3 PT regardless because we can show you several exercises to reduce the pain you experience and
help you regain your independence. Please give us a call today to schedule a therapy session with one of our amazing physical therapists!

Sometimes, we may feel sharp pains shooting through our bodies. Perhaps it’s from straining during physical activity, remaining in one spot for long periods, or standing, sleeping, or sitting in an awkward position. No matter what causes your pain, pinched nerves can affect your everyday life in more ways than one. But what exactly are pinched nerves, and how can you treat and prevent them from happening again? What is a pinched nerve, and what body parts does it affect? Pinched nerves occur when the tissues surrounding nerves press onto nerve roots. While most pinched nerves happen around your neck and upper and lower back, you can also Why Am I Feeling Aches and Pains? How Pinched Nerves Can Affect Your Body
experience it in your hands, elbows, and wrists. However, while the pain may start in one specific area, it can also affect other body parts.
For example, a pinched nerve in your upper back can create pain in your neck, arms, and shoulders. If the pinched nerve is in your lower back, your hips, rear, and legs may ache. What causes pinched nerves? The most common factor is aging. As you get older, your body may not operate like it did when you were younger. However, another reason could be a sudden injury from participating in sports or an accident. These accidents can include awkward lifting, pulling, or twisting movements that strain your body. Additionally, if your job requires you to sit or type for long periods, the amount of time you spend in that position can cause discomfort in your back and hands. How can you treat and prevent pinched nerves? Your pain and discomfort will fade away by themselves for the most part. But you can help your recovery process by going to physical therapy, using pain relievers, applying ice and heat to the affected areas, or wearing a splint on your wrists, hands, or neck. You can take preventive measures to reduce your risk of pinched nerves: Maintain a good posture while sitting or standing, stretch daily, remain active, and change your body position if you’ve been sitting, standing, or lying in one spot for an extended period. If you’re experiencing sharp pain and don’t see any signs of it getting better, please follow up with your health care provider for next steps. As always, if there is anything your friends at M3 PT can do to assist you during this time, please don’t hesitate to call us.
