“E mpathy ” is the ability to put yourself in another man’s place. Of our Saviour Himself it was said: “In all their afflictions he was afflicted.”
As in all Unity’ s other teachings, it is a confused jumble, hard to classify or define in any way. There are many contradictions and in consistencies. Unity denies the fall of man. “W e are prone to think of the ‘fall of man’ as something that hap pened long ago, in the infancy of the race, told, as indeed it is, in allegorical form. Instead, we should realize that the scene depicted in the Garden of Eden is being re enacted in our lives every day. Whenever we accept a restricting condition as having reality of final ity, it proves that we have eaten of the ‘forbidden fruit’ and our eyes are open to evil. “ Unity believes that evil is the result of man’s disobedience to di vine law. It does not exist as an entity in and of itself . . . We all know why Adam disobeyed the Lord God; the arguments of Eve (the feeling nature) were too strong for him! Metaphysically in terpreted, this signifies that every man’s human inclination is to yield to the temptation of the sense con sciousness by the feeling nature” (What Unity Teaches, Turner). One cannot get a clear picture of their Anew of sin: “ Good is all; evil is that which might be if man forsook his guiding light. In the serene mind of God there is no duality, no good-and-bad, no un der standing-and-ignorance. The brilliancy of all-knowing Mind dis solves all shadows, all negations” 0 Christian Healing, Fillmore). He advises his followers in Unity, January 1936: “ Stick to it . . . and say, ‘I am not a sinner. I never did sin. I cannot sin. I am from above.’ ” At their headquarters in Lee’s Summit, the Unity workers abstain from tobacco, liquor, meat and pre sumably sex expression for other than procreation. Fillmore wrote of this matter: “ So long as your eyes see sex and the indulgence there of on any of its planes, you are not pure. You must become mentally so translucent that you see men and women as sexless beings — which CONTINUED
