Doctrinal pointers by Gerald B. Stanton, Th.D. Prof, of Systematic Theology, Talbot Theological Seminary Eternal Security (Port Two)

ontinuing the reasons for the se curity of the Christian as evidenced from the work of the Son (Rom. 8:34), consider (6) the guarantee of Christ’s resurrection. Every born- again believer has “ a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Pet. 1:3). If Christ be not raised, not only is our security in doubt, but also the entirety of our faith is in vain, for we are yet in our sins (1 Cor. 15:17-20). However, since Christ has been raised, that fact alone is an adequate guarantee that our mortal bodies, following death, shall be raised to stand in the light of His presence (Rom. 8:11). There follow two aspects of the priestly ministry of Christ, both of which give assurance that the be liever shall be preserved forever from the penalty of sin. There is (7) the intercession of Christ, which purposes to keep the saint from stumbling (Heb. 7:24,25; Jude 24). Not until we reach eternity shall we fully un derstand and appreciate how the con stant intercessory prayers of Christ have guided our feet around the pit- falls of sin and the snares of Satan (2 Tim. 2:26). Of great importance also is (8) the advocacy of Christ, for this is His prayer ministry in behalf of all Christians who have fallen into sin. Satan chooses to make an issue of the sins of the saints, car rying them day and night in railing accusations before the presence of the Most High God (Job 1 and 2; Rev. 12:10). It is a highly valued part of the present work of Christ that He appears in the presence of the Father in our behalf (Heb. 9:24). While some may maintain that salvation is cancelled because of sin, this notion is corrected by the fact that “ . . . if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1). It is evident that both the finished and the present unfinished work of Christ in our be half render indisputable evidence for the security of those that are His. Four additional evidences are ap parent from the ministry of the Holy Spirit. (9) The Christian has been born again by the Spirit (John 3:1-7),

receiving both the gift of eternal life and position in the family of God. By spiritual birth, he has become a legitimate son of God. His fellowship may be lost, but his sonship will never be abrogated. Rewards and spe cial privileges may be lost (1 Cor. 3:12-15), but the family circle of God will not be broken. Likewise, (10) the Christian is indwelt by the Spirit of God. Unlike the experience of David (Ps. 51:11), the believer of this age is permanently indwelt by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 3:16; 6:19; Rom. 8:9). Christ Himself taught that the Spirit would abide within the Christian forever (John 14:16). This alone is sufficient to guarantee that none indwelt by the Spirit can be eternally lost. Moreover, (11) every believer has been baptized by one Spirit into the Body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:13). Mem bers of that Body shall never be severed the one from the other, nor from Christ the resurrected Head. Finally, (12) Christians are, by the Holy Spirit, “sealed unto the day of redemption” (Eph. 4:30). God has marked by the Spirit those that are His, and none shall ever violate that seal! The “ day of redemption!’ speaks of the culmination of salvation. It is the day when the redeemed shall enter the presence of the Saviour. While these twelve Bible evidences are more than sufficient to prove the doctrine, let there be noticed in ad dition (13) the eternal character of salvation (John 3:15,16); (14) the fact that all major salvation prom ises are in the present tense (John 5:24); that (15) security is guar anteed even in spite of gross sin (1 Cor. 5:5); and that (16) security alone is in harmony with the heaven ly perfection and position of the be liever (2 Cor. 5:17; Eph. 1:3). It is recognized that there are a number of passages which, by them selves, seem to teach insecurity, but these are not overly difficult to ex plain and reconcile with the far larg er group of Scriptures which teach the security of the saint. These “ in security passages” will be considered next month. (To be continued.) END.
