101 because they are related to the production of wine and beer. Consequently, by picking plums young Sutherland made enough to purchase his clothes, which was a help to the family finances because the salary his father received as pastor of the Fulton Presbyterian Church was rather low. Strict discipline governed the Sutherland home. The Lord's day was holy. No play with other children was allowed on Sunday afternoons. Walks were permitted, but, only on the byways, not on the highways. Sunday after- noons were usually spent reading Bible stories and studying the Shorter Cat- echism, which was an important part of every Presbyterian lad's life. Another experience of Dr. Sutherland's childhood which remains vividly in his membory was the great San Francisco earthquake in 1905. He remembers his bed shaking, the medicine bottles crashing to the floor, his father rush- ing to his grandmother's room to rescue her from the danger of the water tank adjoining her room, his mother calming her son's fears, and the family going downstairs and seeing the debris scattered throughout the house. For two weeks the family slept in the barn for fear the house might collapse from the severe aftershocks which followed the original quake. Going to Santa Rosa with the family, he saw the smoking ruins and the bodies of those killed lying on the floor of the surviving church. He saw trainloads of people fleeing north from San Francisco to escape the debacle of the city. When Samuel was nine years of age, the family moved to Sausalito, loc- ated on the north shore of San Francisco Bay, where his father pastored the Presbyterian Church. Since there were no prune orchards in the vicinity, young Sam began selling newspapers on the ferry boats crossing the Bay be- tween Sausalito and San Francisco. Another youthful experience he remember was his first and only try at smoking. Someone on the ferry induced him to try a cigarette. Not knowing how to handle it, he took a big draw and in- haled it. Suddenly, the ferry went into all kinds of gyrations, and he lost . his food. He has never been tempted to smoke since that time.
