109 than the ones he was pursuing. As a result, he visited Culter Academy and enrolled for the last two years of his high school education. This de- ----~-'C islo~ proved to be one of the most important in Richard's life. It gave him a new direction for serving God; and more important, it provided an opportunity to meet his lovely wife, Mary Sutherland, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Samuel Sutherland. At the end of his junior year in High School, young Chase discovered that he needed only four units to graduate. After consulting with both his and Mary's parents, he decided to double enroll during his senior year, completing his senior requirements at Culter Academy and enrolling at Biola as a freshman, taking an average freshman load. Richard was graduated from Culter Academy in 1948. That SUJ.llffier he was invited by the Navigators to attend a Bible Camp at Lake Hume. The Navi- gators, a Christian organization at first working extensively among military personnel in World War II, had expanded their work to high schools and col- leges. Richard's coach at Culter Academy, who worked with the Navigators, encouraged his boys to attend the Camp. Richard' s attendance at this Camp altered the course of his life plans. Originally, he had planned to leave Biola after one year, enroll in an Agricultural School, and then return to the ranch for a life time career. Instead, he remained at Biola changing from a music major to the "Collegiate'' course or Bachelor of Theology pro- gram, from which he was graduated in 1951 with the Th. B. degree. The same year he was ordained by his home church, Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. He had the distinction of being the youngest student to graduate from Biola with the original Th. B. degree. His wife Mary, who majored in Christian Education, was graduated from Biola in June, 1952. While attending Biola, Dr. Chase sang in two quartets. He also had a gen~ral interest in sports, played in the Biola Band~ sang in the Biola Choir, and toured with some of the Choral groups. During the school year,
