110 1951-1952, he attended Los Angeles City College taking liberal arts courses he had not taken at Biola, since his work there had been exclusively in Bible and Theology. At City College he engaged in sports, both track and . basketball. He also studied Forensi~s and became involved in the School's debate program. As a result of these achievements at City College, he re- ceived a scholarship at Pepperdine College, one half for his work in Forensic and the other half for his skill in basketball. Dr. Chase entered Pepperdine College in the fall of 1952, and was gradu- ated in June, 1953, with a B. A. degree in Speech Education. To make up some deficiencies in the field of science, he did some work at Valley Junior Col- lege in the San Fernando Valley. He continued with graduate work at Pepper- dine, and was graduated in June, 1954, with a M. A. degree in Speech. While there in 1953, he began teaching part time at Biola; after his graduation he began teaching full time in the Speech Department, which was small and underdeveloped insasmuch as he was the only full-time teacher in t."'18 Department. In addition, he was the Pastor of Calvary Church in Hollywood until late in December, 1956, when he resigned to attend Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The Chase family went to New York in the summer of 1957; Dr. Chase ser- ved as an interim pastor on several occasions, while pursuing his graduate studies at Cornell until August, 1959, when the family returned to California He resumed a full teaching schedule in the Speech Department at Biola in the fall of 1959, still working on his doctoral dissertation. He received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Speech in February, 1961. In his early years in the Speech Department at Biola, Dr. Chase began working on a forensic program. His experience in forensics at Los Angeles City College and Pepperdine and his graduate work in Speech had given him an excellent background for this work.
