111 in the circle of the Western Regional. Through the years Biola has ranked high in debating circles, having won numerous honors in competition with some of the large Universities in the Western Regional. Much of the credit . for this success must go to Dr. Chase, who laid the foundation. His heavy administrative duties forced Dr. Chase to resign from his teaching position. In 1955, he was appointed Academic Vice President, a new position established upon the recom.~endation of Biola's Consultant, Dr. Pullius. This position, established primarily to relieve the President of some of his administrative responsibilities, which had become too numerous for one man, was sorely needed also to provide a closer liason between the Administration and the faculty and staff of the College and the Seminary. In the late 1960's, when Dr. Sutherland was contemplating retirement, the Board began a search for his successor. A special com.~ittee of faculty members was appointed to help in this process. After having considered several possible prospects, the committee considered the advantages of ap- pointing someone already associated with the School. They finally cncluded there was no one better qualified for the position than Dr. Chase, whom they recommended to the Board, which concurred, and Dr. Chase became the fifth President of Biola, effective July. 1, 1970. Perhaps Dr. Chase's tenure of office as President of Biola University might be characterized best by the word, 11 implementation. 11 ·while it is true several new programs were initiated during his administration, a careful examination will reveal that much of his career as President was devoted to bringing to fruition the goals of the School set in the early phase of the Post World Nar II era. To implement these goals meant the enlargement of the curriculum, the improvement and enlargement of the faculty and staff, the enlargement of facilities, and many other changes and developments. Dr. Chase's philosophy of a proper balance for a Christian School, such as Biola, is best expressed in a statement he made in his Inaugural
