112 Address, "There are two tyrants to sound education. They are tradition on the one hand, and fashion on the other." In elaborating on this statement, he warned against an institution so bound to tradition that it cannot, or will not change its program to meet the current needs of the generation it seeks to serve. He also warned against the danger of an educational insti- tution convinced it must rush frantically into new programs simply because others are doing so, just to keep pace with the fashion or rule itself out of the picture. Historically, this balance has proved to be the proper one for Biola University; and Dr. Chase, as a good academic navigator, hept the School on this course during his presidency, from July, 1970 to 1982, when he resigned to become President of Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois. Dr. Clyde Cook, the sixth and current President of Biola University, assumed the office June 1, 1982. He came to Biola with a unique and broad background, having been associated with the School as a student, teacher, and member of the Board of Directors for a period of twenty-one years before becoming President. Also he is a fourth-generation missionary. His Great- grandparents and grandparents were missionaries to China. His mother, Miss Francis Wight, went to China as a missionary after being graduated from Columbia College in New York. On one of her sea voyages, she was invited by the Scottish Captain, Archibald Cook, to his table as a special guest. This was the beginning of their courtship. They were married one year later, and settled in Hong Kong, where Clyde, the fourth of six children, was born. Clyde Cook's boyhood was quite exciting, to say the least. When he was six, the Japanese invaded Hong Kong, and the Cook family were interned in three different concentration camps: Clyde, his mother, a brother and a sister, in one camp; his father in another; and two brothers and a sister in a third camp. His Mother's group shared a two-bed room bungalow with DR. CLYDE COOK
