Henry - A History of Biola University Since 1908

128 After completing his graduate studies, Dr . Crawford was offered several opportunities, but he became interested in a position with the United Sta- tes Borax Corporation, in Anaheim, California, only a few miles from tne~·--·---"··- Biola campus . Providentially, Dr. and Mrs. Chase had just returned to La Mirada so that Richard could resume his teaching career . At that time Biola had recently moved to the new La .Mirada campus and being in the process of inaugurating a nursing program, had constructed a new building to house the Science Department. Dr . Chase wrote Dr . Crawford about Biola's need for some help in the area of chemiistry . At the same time the Borax Corporation had offered Dr . Crawford a position with them , and had offered to pay his expenses to Anaheim to examine the situation . While in Anaheim Dr . Crawford visited the Biola campus, learning that the need was for a part-time faculty member in the Science Department to teach a basic course in chemistry, a requirement in the nursing program . Since this would provide him opportunity to help Biola, Dr . Crawford felt God was leading him in this direction . Consequently, he accepted the pos- ition with the Borax Corporation, and agreed to help Biola . The Crawfords settled in La Mirada, close to both the Borax Corporation and to Biola . Arriving in the spring of 1960, Dr . Crawford began his first course in chemistry at Biola in the fall semester . At that time the chem- istry laboratory at Biola was nothing but a room with benches installed and stacks of supply boxes which had not been opened. Having to put the labor- atory together, Dr. Crawford really began from scratch . His full time work in the Research Laboratory at the Borax Corporation was invaluable to him in teaching chemistry. He continued working for the Boarax Corporation and teaching part time at Biola from 1960 to 1964 . In 1964, the Boarax Corporation assigned Dr . Crawford to a new job, manager of their Agriculture Research, which required that he travel extens- ively , which ultimately would interfere with his teaching part time at Biola .
