Henry - A History of Biola University Since 1908

129 Later he was promoted to yet a higher position, Manager of their Agricultural Products. His office was located on Wilshire Boulevard, in Los Angeles, which meant he had to commute daily and do considerable travefing~;ut;ide the State. Being away from his family was difficult for Dr. Crawford. During one of his trips to New York City, he was so disturbed about this matter that he could not sleep. As he began to pray earnestly for a solution, his mind flashed back over the recent years. He realized the strong feeling he had for Biola, for Drs. Sutherland and Chase, and for other colleagues with whom he had been associated there. He began to realize just how much Biola meant to him. Upon his return to La Mirada, Dr. Crawford felt a strong compulsion to d:iscuss his feelings with Drs. Sutherland and Chase. Arriving on the campus, to his surprise, he learned that the same week he was wrestling with his feelings and praying, the Chemistry teacher, with whom some irreconcilable problems had developed, had been asked to resign in the middle of the school year. This left Biola without a full-time chemistry teacher. The position was offered to Dr. Crawford, for the fall of 1967. After much prayer by him and Mrs. Crawford, he resigned from the Borax Corporation to accept the position at Biola. In the spring of 1968, Dr. Chase, Academic Vice President, with most of the responsibilities of the Dean, asked Dr. Crawford to assist with some of the administrative tasks. Later, Dr. Chase recorrunended that the Board ap- point Dr. Crawford as Biola's seventh Dean, a position he held from 1969 to 1976, when he was appointed Director for Institutional Planning, a newly established position necessitated by the growth and development of the School. Then, when Mr. Paul Schwepker, Vice President for Business and Finances, re- tired, his responsibilities were combined with those of Dr. Crawford, under .a new title of Vice President for Planning and Information Systems, the po- sition he now holds.
