144 he entered Moody Bible Institute, which his older sister had attended. When he finished Moody Bible Institute, it was time for another import- ant decision; where would he serve the Lord, and with what group? Inasmuch as he had grown up in the Brethren Church, attendance of which during that period was a matter of convenience rather than of conviction, he decided to enroll in the Brethren Graduate School of Theology in Winona Lake, Indiana. While there he dedicated his life to the ministry in the Brethren Church. At the end of his first year in Seminary, O'Neal married Miss Phoebe Skilprart, on June 1, 1940. She was of Dutch heritage, and from the small town of Harrah, Washington, near where Glenn had lived. After high school she stayed home to help keep the house for her father and the six brothers ยท who ran their farm. Consequently, she was not able to continue her educ- ation until later in life. At the end of his first year in Seminary, O'Neal became a student pas- tor for a year at the Congregational Christian Church in Talma, Indiana. During his last year in Seminary he began pastoring the First Brethren Chu- rch of Canton, Ohio, which he continued for three years, driving more than five hundred miles each week. During this pastorate, he began his college work at Kent State University. Later, while he was the pastor of the Tenth Street Brethren Church in Ashland, Ohio, for three years, he studied at Ashland College. With this experience he began to feel the need to start a new church, which he did in Santa Barbara, California, and attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, graduating with a B. A. degree in speech. In 1949, Dr . O'Neal began his twelve year-pastorate at the First Breth- ren Church Los Angeles. Because the church was close to the University of Southern California, he enrolled in the graduate school in the Department of ~peech receiving an M. A. degree in 1952, and a Ph. D. in 1937.
