148 follows: "Shall the Biola Press be sold? Shall be Book Store be sold? Shall the Jewish Department be discontinued" Can the School dispense with its dormitories without serious loss? Is there a department of the wo;k---=-=·"·-· . that can be eliminated without interfering with the training of young peo- ple for Christian service, and the evangelistic and missionary programs?" This last question also involved the School ' s activities in China. At that time, they were obligated to provide from thirty to forty thousand dollars annually for the maintainence of their work, known as ~he Hunan Bible In- stitute. Other questions in the Report concerned such matters as, "Are there employees whose services could be dispensed with? Should the Radio Station be sold to commercial broadcasting interests and program time be purchased from a commercial station?" It was obvious the Board was faced with the problem of retrenchment, with no other option; but where to cut remained the question . A corrunittee to consider the various ways and means by which this could be done, includ- ing the education program, was appointed . At the same time, the proposal to contact Mr. Birch, relative to the possibility of the Temple Baptist Church's taking over the School's property was made. Although this idea never came to fruition, it does emphasize the seriousness of the situation . The Retrenchment Committee Report in April, 1930, included such items as the reduction of the King's Business to 48 pages with a one-color cover ; drastic reductions in several departments including the following: The Evangelistic, Bible, Summer School, Correspondence School, Education, Even- ing School, Music Department, Library, Bible Women's Work, and the Shop Work. To implement this program of retrenchment, the Board voted to reduce the faculty and staff drastically, to become effective for some at the end of the month; for others the end of the semester . The Extension staff were notified of termination unless they could bring in sufficient funds during the month to pay their salaries. In addition, the Book Store was to incur
