166 Department of Education revealed that this would require having recognition from the University of California which would necessitate including courses which the Biola Christian - - EducatI~~-;~jor program could not do without weaken- . ing both programs. Out of this, however, developed the Education Major, which was able to meet the requirements set by the State of California . The above needs brought about the necessity to change the name from the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, or the acronym Biola, as the School was so wi dely known, to Biola Bible College. After much additional work, Biola Bible College was granted the necessary "provisional accreditation" with the stipulation that the students in the prcgram complete satisfactorily one semester of work at the University of California, which in turn required that this work be completed through the Los Angeles State College, which was arranged satisfactorily for all concerned . Likewise, changes were made for the ministerial students. For example, the fifth year program Wa.s replaced by a graduate School of Theology with an entrance requirement of graduation from a four - year college . The graduates of the School of Theology would earn a Bachelor of Divinity degree, which later was changed to a Master of Divinity degree when the school in the fall semester of 1952 became Talbot Theological Seminary affiliated with Biola Bible College, with a total enrollment of thirteen students from eight schools across the country . With these academic improvements, it appeared that things were going well, when the University of California notified Biola that it would no longer serve as an accrediting agency, and that the School should seek mem- bership in the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Moving in this direction had not been anticipated by Biola; but now it had little choice in the matter, and so began the long procedure of accreditation . The Secretary of the accreditating Association suggested that a pre- liminary examination be held as it appeared impossible for Eiola to meet the requirements at the first try .
