169a centuries; namely, pressuring those to whom missionaries go with the Gospel "to .walk as we do, to talk as we do, and to think as we do before we introduce -·~--them-· to Jesus Christ." Over the years, this concept has changed. To reach people for Christ the missionaries must be attuned in every area possible to the particular culture in which they will work. ' 'The objectives, therefore, of the School of Intercultural Studies and World Missions can be summarized as follows: (1) to prepare missionary re- cruits with cross-cultural communication skills for international service, (2) to provid~ mission agencies the opportun~ty to encourage the personal and academic development of their overseas staff, (3) to prepare ministers and Christian education workers for the cross-cultural ministries .they will face in today's multi-ethnic churches, (4) to develope expertise in linguis- tics, Bible translation, anthropology, church growth, and so forth, and (5) to help the missionary to prepare nationals of every nation for service in their own culture. Although relatively new, this School already offers four degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in Intercultural Studies, a Master of Arti in Intercultural Studies, a Master of Arts in Missions; and the Doctor of Missiology, which was instituted in the fall of 1985. The School also works in conjunction with Talobt Theological Seminary in a master degree program which offers a Master of Divinity with a missions major; a Mastei of Theology with a mis- sions major; and, a Master of Ministries with a missions major. One of the most significant events in the academic development of Biola occurred in 1981, with the change from the College to the University status. Previously, at a Board meeting in November, 1980, President Chase made his proposal for this change, reiterating some of the advantages of formalizing the university concept which had been operative in the School for some time. Dr. Chase's specif:ic reconunendations to the Board of Directors at that time were (1) that Biola adopt a university name to communicate better what
