China to some extent . Eventually the Japanese army was forced to tighten its hold on the areas they had occupied. This destroyed any hope of reopen- ing the School which had been closed, and the continuation of other activi- . ties in China until the War ended. In 1942, the situation had become so critical that Dr. Roberts had sent some of the work out of Changsha in order that they might evacuate on a moment ' s notice, and he was providing one meal per day for fifteen hun- dred children . In 1942, the Red Cross took over part of the Institute ' s buildings on a one-year lease . In early 1943, the situation became so cri- tical that Dr. Roberts was forced to return to the United States. He pre- sented a full report of the China situation to the Biola Board, stating he hoped to return by mid-1944 and reopen the School . His return travel, however, was dependent upon the War Shipment Board. After the end of the War in 1945, the picture became much brighter. Biola sent Mr . Russel Davis to Changsha to help in the reopening of the School-. Considerable damage had been done to the buildings, and . about all they could do was engage in work among refugees and displaced persons, in conjunction with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Association . However, by working with UNRRA and allowing them to use some of its facil- ities, the Hunan Bible Institute received some funds which helped to re- store some of the buildings. The Provincial Government was desperate for facilities; therefore, the School had to share its facilities .with it, but man- aged to hold on to enough buildings to . meet its needs . Late in 1945, when Mr. Davis returned to the United States and reported the situation to the Board, he asked that a minimum of $5,000 . 00 a month, for the next twelve months be sent to the School . He also informed the Board that considerable funds would be necessary to repair the damaged build- ings. During this time Dr. Louis Talbot, President of Biola, and Mr . Rus- . sell Allder, a mamber of the Board and Business Manager of Biola, made a
