29 with Thomas Bard President, Lyman Stewart Vice-President, and Wallace Hard- ison Treasurer. Thus, on October 7, 1890, the business which had grown from a "borrowed shoestring" to a billion--dorlar --corporation becarr:e the Union Oil Company of California, and still operates under that name as one of the largest of its kind in the world. Mr. Stewart later succeeded Mr. Bard as President, a position he held until his advanced age took him out of the active operation of the Company. He continued in the capacity of Chairman of the Board of Directors until his death. THOMAS CORWIN HORTON The second member of the co-founding team of Biola University was Rev. Thomas Corwin Horton. Unfortunately, the historic material available on the background of Rev. Horton, prior to his coming to Los Angeles, is mini- mal. This should in no way imply that his role in the founding of this School was minor compared to that of his partner in the project . To the contrary, it can be said of him, "He did the leg work," in establishing the School, while Mr. Stewart backed him with prayer and finances. Most of the information available on his early life was provided by one of his daughters from scant family records, and from her memory related to the author in personal interviews. Thomas Corwin Horton was born August 3, 1948, in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a young man he accepted Christ as his savior, and became active in Church and Sunday School, and was eventually ordained by the Presbyterian Church. Later, he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he entered business and be- came rather successful. He had an income at least three times that which he received afterwards in full time Christian service. At the age of twenty- seven he gave up his business career to enter Christian work, taking the position of Secretary of the Indianapolis YMCA. Interestingly, he was called to ~he position by a Businessmen's Prayer group of which Benjamine Harrison, later President of the United States, was a member.
