30 From the position of Secretary of the YMCA in Indianapolis, Rev. Hor- ton was called to the House of Hope Presbyterian Church of St. Paul Minne- sota, where he served as the ~ 0 15.fre'C-tor-of the Church's work at the Fourth . Street Mission and at the Harvester .Works Chapel. This ministry proved to be excellent training for him in that it broadened his vision for the basic needs of man which remained prominent in his ministry the remainder of his life. It also helped focus his attention on the great dearth of good Bible training, so desperately needed at that time, and helped to prepare him for his role in the founding of Biola. In November, 1884, Rev. Horton was called to Bethany Presbyterian Churcr in Philadelphia, where he served four years as an Associate \1ith Dr. A. T. Pierson, one of the outstanding Bible scholars of that day . His work with Dr. Pierson was primarily with young people and as the Director of the evan- gelistic activities of the Church. During this time he helped organize a work that later became the John Chambers Memorial Church. Also, he spent several hours daily in systematic Bible study under the private tutorship of Dr. Pierson. It was this systematic study which helped Rev. Horton be- come an outstanding Bible teacher in his later years and helped prepare him for his role as one of the first fulltime instructors at Biola . Rev. Horton returned to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1888, this time as Secretary of the St. Paul YMCA. While in this position he organized the Northwest Bible Training School, which opened in October, 1889. As far as is known, this School ceased operation when he left the area. Because of the strong emphasis of the YMCA on a liberal and social program, and because of a lack of cooperation of its Board of Directors in the evangelistic pro- gram he sought to implement, Rev. Horton left the Association in May, 1982 . For the next eight years he did evangelistic work and had a Bible Teaching ministry in St. Paul. During this time he organized the Gospel Tabernacle, an independent Church, in the center of the City, and ministered there until
