. end of 1889. In January, 1900, Rev. Horton moved his family to Dallas, Texas, and became pastor of the Scofield Congregational Church, where he served for the next three years, -after which-ne-- fook the position of Secre- . tary of the Dallas YMCA. He remained in that position until he came to Los Angeles three years later, where he teamed up with Mr. Lyman Stewart and served the Lord the ramainder of his life. His ministry after 1906 is found elsewhere in this history. The circumstances which brought Rev. Horton to Los Angeles, and into contact with Mr. Lyman Stewart, are most interesting; in many ways they seem providential. In early 1894,Dr. Chichester, Pastor of Immanuel Presbyterian Church of Los Angeles, of which Lyman Stewart was a member, asked him to contact a possible prospect for the position of Assistant Pastor of the Chur- ch. At a Bible Conference in Niagara,, New York, Mr. Stewart discussed the matter with several ministers for their recommendations. Interestingly, a majority of those contacted recommended Rev. T. C. Horton as the best man they knew for such position. However, upon his return to Los Angeles, f.1r. Stewart learned the Church had decided to drop the matter for the time being. The following year the matter of an Assistant Pastor was again considere 1 and again, Mr. Stewart was asked for a recommendation. Remembering the spl- endid reports he had received previously on Mr. Horton, he presented his name as a possibility. About that same time, Dr. Wilbur Chapman, a nation- ally prominent minister, conducted an Evangelistic Campaign in Los Angeles~ - The leaders of the Immanuel Presbyterian Church took advantage of this op- portunity to make inquiries of several of the ministers working with Dr. Chapman as to their recommendations for a suitable man for the position. Each, without knowing his colleagues were being asked the same question, re- coITu~ended Rev. Horton. Acting on these recommendations, the Church author- ized Mr. Stewart to contact Rev. Horton to ascertain his interest in serving as an Assistant to Dr. Chichester.
