43 of the Church Federation. Classes will meet on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday nights. One period will be given to soul winning, using Torrey's book, How to bring men to Christ, and other such theines-"~~-- p~-ay~r, the Holy Spirit, the duty of Christians, and . the Word." Rev. R. A. Hadden and Mr. Horton were to conduct these training classes, which began as planned in October, 1907; and Mr. Horton was able to report, "We have about six hundrec people enrolled in the different classes." All these types of classes, Clubs, and other activities produced a larg( group of young people dedicated to Christian activities. They were also a recruiting ground and an advertising media for the Bible Institute when it finally started. To emphasize the need for a Bible Institute in the area, Mr. Horton pointed out that of all these young people, "two left during this period to attend the Pacific Bible School, six to attend Moody Bible Insti- tute, and two to attend the Nazarene School." He added, "Others are waiting for us to begin our work." This report served as a catalyst to bring about the opening of the Bible Institute. By this time, the co-founders of Biola were convinced the time had come either to launch their project or to drop the matter entirely. After consulting with others interested in the venture they decided to make the move. According to Mrs. Ethel Wells, daughter of Rev. Horton, the first stu- dent body of Biola came mainly from three groups. She said, "When it came time to open the Institute, they had the Fishermen's Club, the Lyceum Club, and the Sunday School Teachers' Class my father had been teaching for some time to draw students from." These young people all had friends in their various churches who were also interested in such a school. Together, these sources provided the nucleus for the first classes at Biola, and through them the word of the opening of the Institute was spread widely throughout the Los Angeles area.
