England, and Puerto Rica. The Fishermen's Club was meeting the needs among young men; however, ther was a similar need among the young . w6fuen - f or-fellowship and Bible study . The Street owner of the Fifth'Store, therefore, invited Mr. T. c. Horton to conduct Bib- le classes for his young women employees. This group, known as the Lyceum Club, held its first meeting in the same rug department made available to the men. Soon other young women employed in surrounding stores became inter- ested and were invited to attend the meetings . As the attendance in these classes among the two groups increased, the store owner decided to equip a room adjoining the rug department as a kitchen, a dining room, and a class- room . Later he prepared an outside opening so that theClubs could hold meetings when the store was closed. Both groups were fertile recruiting op- portunities for Biola students . With students available, the other needs for the Bible Institute to begin operation were a place to meet, a faculty, and a curriculum. A facil- ity not the least pretentious, rented at the corner of Third and Main Street, in Los Angeles, was on the second floor above a pool room . A member of the first class remembers climbing the rickety stairs to a relatively large room which had been made into an auditorium. There were an additional room large enough to accommodate a good sized class, a kitchen, and a little nook off to the side which was later used as a print shop. At the front of the build- ing was a lounge, referred to as a "parlor" with large windows enabling the students to look down on Third street. Also, there was a small office separ- ated from the lounge by a counter on which literature was displayed and where students completed registration forms. The faculty and student body were no more pretentious than were the facilities in which they met. The first student body consisted of thirty- five students . Some were registered as regular students; others attended as . auditors who desired more Bible training. The regular faculty consisted
