64 problem, Mr. Horton said, "I find great division among the students, some holding one line concerning the Body and the Bride and some another. I tele- phoned you that Dr . Torrey would have the selection of his own faculty, and am asking you whether you would be willing to sign our statement of Doctrine." On the second issue, that of starting another school, Mr. Horton wrote, "I could not understand how you and Tucker could plan for another school while working here, but I have been conscious for more than a year that you were not loyal to the best interest of the Institute, and felt an unholy ambition was carrying you away." Having refused to discuss the matter personally with Mr. Horton, Hadden wrote directly to Mr. Stewart, President of the Board, stating in vitriolic language strong counter accusations against Mr. Horton: "Intrigue, untruth, misrepresentation, false accusations, jealousy, and vindictiveness :::l.re so inter mingled that I almost despair of clarifying the atmosphere." Concerning the charge of teaching heresy, he said, ''This is the charge that stirs me most of all and is one which I will most vehemently deny. No man on the face of the earth can exceed the carefulness that I have exercised in teaching, seek- ing to teach those thing's only that are in perfect harmony with the Scrip- tures . Indeed I have refrained from teaching about the Scriptures, and have taught only the Scriptures themselves." His use of "only the Scriptures them- selves," concerning the Body and Bride of Christ was tantamount to saying the view he taught was what the Scriptures say, and the view held by Biola was incorrect. Furthermore, concerning the Biola Statement of Doctrine, Mr . Hadden wrote, "I am in perfect harmony with the Statement from beginning to end, with the possible exception of statement number two containing the descript- ion of the Church. In relation to this item, I will say that I am open for conviction on the subject; if the friends who dogmatically assert the Church is the bride will bring forth one Scripture that declares that fact, I will
