SUBMERSIBLES: TRITON SUBMARINES

P eerless technical expertise and an insatiable appetite to push the boundaries of deep-sea exploration safely is what so clearly sets Triton Submarines apart from any other submersible manufacturer. In this below Q&A with Triton Co-Founder and President Patrick Lahey, a 40 year industry veteran and one of the foremost submersible experts in the world, we dive deep into the incredible world of ocean exploration through the lens of the world’s leading submersible manufacturer. Here is a sneak peek into Triton’s innovative new designs and plans to build the world’s first elliptical shaped transparent pressure boundary for Scenic cruise line this Fall. Can you tell us more about when and why Triton was founded? What was the mis - sion initially? I started diving at the age of 13 and began a career as a commercial diver at 18. I was for- tunate to pilot my first human occupied submersible at 21 from a drilling rig offshore Santa Barbara, California. This experience left such an indelible impression that I decided to devote the rest of my working life to these remarkable machines. We started Triton in 2007 with the goal of creating human occupied submersibles for private yacht owners, who have an interest in the ocean, which most often also includes a passion for diving, a desire to explore and an adventurous spirit. In addition, these clients have the financial wherewithal necessary to afford the vessels required to launch, recover and support a submersible. Interestingly, while many of our submersibles are used primarily for recre- ation, more and more of our clients recognize the capacity of their submersibles to be effec- tively used as a scientific, filmmaking, and archaeology platform, which is thrilling for all of us at Triton who love and care about the ocean. It is wonderful to see Triton products being used to enhance our knowledge and understanding of this most beautiful place on our planet, which also creates interest, excitement, and advocacy for it too.

What makes people at Triton passionate about what they do?

At Triton, we are passionate about our products because of the incredible experiences they provide to our clients. Triton is made up of engineers, technicians, and designers, but we are also ocean advocates. Many of us have spent much of our lives working aboard vessels or working in, on and under the water, and so we recognize and appreciate the importance of the ‘tools’ we develop and create for ocean exploration.
