TEEN WOWS JUDGES WITH ORIGINAL SONG TO WIN C-R NEXT TALENT

When she was announced as the winner of the 2024 Clarence-Rockland Next Talent competition, Ariel Shaw just couldn’t believe it. “I was just shocked,” said the 17-year-old teenager from Rockland. “I wasn’t expecting it all, and at the time, it just wasn’t registe- ring what was happening.” Shaw, who is attending Canterbury High School in Ottawa as she pursues her lifelong dream of becoming a full-time musician, was one of nine participating acts for this year’s talent search, an event created by the City of Clarence-Rockland in 2023. The 2024 Clarence-Rockland Next Talent competition was held on Sunday, May 5, at the Optimiste Performance Hall. “We were amazed by the talented people we have here in our community,” said Chris- tine Sarault, the City of Clarence-Rockland’s community and cultural activities coordinator, who helped spearhead the talent show. “We were really happy with the turnout this year and just really impressed with what we saw here today.” Shaw performed an original song called ‘The Rain’, which deals with a young person’s mental health struggles. Her performance earned rave reviews and blew away the judging panel and sees this opportunity as a first step to jumpstarting a career in music. “I feel really good right now, this is such an amazing opportunity,” said Shaw, who lists Joni Mitchell, Billie Eilish and Noah Kahan as her biggest musical influences. “Winning this competition is such a big confidence boost and, hopefully, it will lead to that big break for me in my future musical career.” Shaw auditioned for Canada’s Got Talent,

Poupart. Il m’a fait beaucoup de compli- ments et n’a cessé de me dire que j’avais beaucoup de potentiel. J’ai été très surpris. C’était une expérience extraordinaire pour moi.» Au début de son périple dans le bras de fer, l’adolescent a été pris sous l’aile de son cousin, Justin Major de Casselman, qui s’est fait un nom dans la communauté canadienne du bras de fer. «Il m’a vraiment aidé avec la technique, a déclaré M. Poupart. Il m’a vraiment aidé à démarrer et à apprendre ce que je devais savoir sur le bras de fer.» M. Poupart espère que ses récents succès en compétition lui permettront de participer aux championnats provinciaux, qui auront lieu le 18 mai à Sudbury. Il participe à des compétitions tout au long de l’année et s’entraîne une fois par semaine avec un groupe de Hammond. «J’aime le sentiment que je ressens lorsque je participe à une compétition de bras de fer, a déclaré M. Poupart, qui joue également au hockey. C’est très amusant et nous verrons jusqu’où cela me mènera.»
Zakary Poupart est déjà en train de se bâtir une belle carrière au bras de fer. L’élève de 10e année, de l’École secon- daire catholique l’Escale, a récemment rem- porté la première place dans la catégorie des poids libres de 151 lb et plus (avec son bras gauche), lors du deuxième tournoi annuel de lutte à la ferme de Picton Arm Wrestling qui s’est déroulé à Loha Farms le 27 avril. C’est la dernière d’une série de succès pour l’adolescent, qui s’est classé premier (avec les deux bras) au East Region Arm Wrestling High School Tournament en mars et qui a également terminé deuxième (avec les deux bras) au tournoi Capital Fair en août dernier. M. Poupart a eu envie d’essayer ce sport après avoir vu à la télévision le champion canadien de bras de fer Devon Larratt lors d’une compétition. «J’ai regardé tous ses matchs et je voulais lui ressembler», a déclaré M. Poupart. M. Larratt est connu pour se rendre dans les tournois et M. Poupart a admis avoir été frappé par les étoiles lorsqu’il a rencontré la star canadienne du bras de fer. M. Poupart a même été invité au club d’entraînement de M. Larratt plus tôt cette année, où il a eu la chance d’apprendre

It is, indeed, a meat-laden platter that sits before you with what must be a half- dozen meats intermingling with your fries and cheese curds all of which is smothered beneath a rich brown gravy. To start, the hand-cut fries are twice cooked, blanched and then fried hot and crisp to order (they were very good); the cheese curds are from, of course, St-Albert Cheese, an historic cooperative that started in 1894. A maven of poutine, perhaps, but Amyot is reluctant to divulge the specific ingredients and techniques that she uses, offering only that some of the meats are marinated and slow-cooked over the course of a day. I rooted around the bowl of morsels and found some pork breakfast sausage and some crispy bits of roasted pork and beef which gave the dish some added texture. There is a wide reach to Mom’s poutine: her trucks were at the recent Orleans Poutine Festival and are scheduled to pop up at events in Wendover, Maxville, Chesterville, Metcalfe, Carp, Kanata and Shawville, Quebec. That’s a full summer up until October for poutine, the classic Quebecois – and Canadian – dish that Charlebois maintains should be nominated as the first Canadian dish to be declared “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO, just like Neapolitan pizza and the Parisian baguette. With an unexpected interruption for a global pandemic, Mom’s Kitchen has been serving breakfast, lunch and din- ner since 2013, but owner and cook Manon Amyot also runs two food trucks that makes hers a very busy schedule, especially in the summer. Up a few stairs from the street and into the casual restaurant on Landry Road, there’s the POS system behind some plexiglass, a cooler case for serve-yourself-soda, a dining area replete with pool table and sundry and assorted tchotchke and bric-a-brac that include an ancient Singer sewing machine and old-timey cash register, the latter two remnants of a bygone era. And Mom’s menu is chock full of classics, too, from a full sheet of breakfasts – inclu- ding baloney and cretons maison – club sandwiches and “hot hamburg” platters, whistle dogs, fish and chips, lasagna and spaghetti and meatballs. What also caught my eye was “Old Cana- dian Food” on Amyot’s business card. “When we cater, we try to offer old-fashio- ned food like your grandmother used to cook,” says Amyot, who started her career in the kitchen when she was 15 and preparing meals for the family of a local entrepreneur. Indeed, classic diner fare and home-style meals. But I was interested in another ver- sion of classic: what Mom’s calls poutine du fermier available from a short list of spe- cialty poutines. It was all the more intriguing because the menu notes, “We are famous for our Farmer’s Poutine.” Granted, it’s a self-proclaimed distinction, but Mom’s prepares a lot of poutine – espe- cially during the summer with those two trucks – and the famous dish is high up my
Poutine is ubiquitous across Canada. I couldn’t possibly count the number of times, in several different cities, I’ve scarfed a cardboard takeout clamshell packed with crisp, piping hot fries, melty cheese curds that I describe as sounding “squidgy” when your molars start to compress them, and the drippy gravy. Over the past decade or so, there has been an evolution: the fries that form the foundational starch of the poutine have morphed into a blank slate for a host of unique flavours and ingredients: butter chicken poutine, lobster poutine, gumbo poutine and pizza poutine. While I occasionally dive into that riot of possible, and sometimes improbable, ingredients, in my new home here I get a different feeling about poutine – that I’m a bit closer to the origins, the epicentre, of the uber-rich and indulgent snack food and not just geographically. I don’t tuck into the view that poutine is Canada’s national dish, but it certainly is more than just a regional one. Regardless, its origins have assumed a mythic status that dates to 60 years ago in Quebec when the word was purportedly first found on the menu at L’Ideal in Warwick, about two hours northeast of Montreal. According to poutine historian Sylvain Charlebois, in his book “Poutine Nation,” the gravy wasn’t added until 1962, and only then as side dish to the fries and cheese curds. It was possibly Jean-Claude Roy, of Drummondville, who created the trifecta in 1964, says Charlebois. In a poutine pilgrimage in The Toronto Star in 2008, “Food Sleuth” Marion Kane tried to trace the origins of the dish to

La conseillère municipale de Bourget, Diane Choinière, a présenté une motion lors de la réunion du conseil municipal de Clarence-Rockland du 17 avril, demandant à ses collègues de considérer l’ajout du Festival d’Halloween et du Carnaval d’hiver, deux événements organisés par le Club Opti- miste de Bourget, en tant qu’événements importants dans la politique du programme de subventions municipales de la Cité de Clarence-Rockland. Ces deux événements sont devenus des incontournables dans la communauté et cette motion permettrait un processus de financement équitable pour le Festival d’Halloween et le Carnaval d’hiver. Lorsque le règlement original de la poli- tique a été créé, il n’y avait pas de carnaval à Bourget.
