# Be Payroll

Temilola Adeyoju MCIPPDip, payroll manager at VIVID Housing Ltd, reveals how her career has progressed with the help of training and qualifications and explains how studying with IPP Education (IPPE) has taken her career to new heights

How did you begin your career in payroll? Prior to relocating to the UK, I was an engineer. After I got married to another engineer and moved here, I realised it would be difficult to have a healthy home life if we both were travelling a lot, so I started researching other fulfilling job roles. In the meantime, I got a sales assistant job at Sainsbury’s while the search for the best alternative career continued. One fateful day, my manager asked if I would like to process payroll for the store, which I agreed to without knowing what it entailed or giving it much thought. I had in-house training and that was my first payroll job. After a while I considered going into accounting and I did a bookkeeping course, but the next job I could get was as a payroll administrator with the NHS Shared Business Services. I took the offer in the hope of switching to accounting later, funnily. After a while, an opportunity arose to study for a CIPP-approved qualification, and I thought “why not?”. I enrolled for the course and by the time I graduated, I realised payroll was what I wanted to do. I have been in payroll ever since, working my way to where I am now with a focus on greater things within the industry. What prompted you to study with IPPE? When I was presented with the opportunity at work to study with IPPE, I researched it and realised it’s the best body for payroll professionals. Also, I

strongly believe that if anything’s worth doing at all, then it’s worth doing in the best possible way. If I am going to do payroll for the rest of my life, then I must learn all I can about it to make me efficient and very good at my work. Since IPPE was rated the best, I chose to study with the best. I was also impressed by the study mode which allowed me to work while studying, meaning I have the privilege to apply the knowledge acquired from my study in real life. How did you manage studying with your other commitments? It was very tough, but I strongly believe that anything is possible. You must believe you can and take right steps of actions. My husband and family were very supportive and helpful with household chores and caring for my son, who was four years old when I started. My company gave me paid time off for my exams which meant I had extra time to study. I also spent most evenings studying, writing, and researching for assignments. At one point I felt like backing out, but the support I received from home, my father and work kept me going. What tips do you have for people considering taking an IPPE qualification? First, you need to be sure this is what you want and identify why you are going into it, as that will ensure you’ll be able to give it your best. Payroll is very rewarding but even more so when you have a CIPP- approved qualification because it’s highly

recognised by all employers and required if you plan to go up the managerial ladder in payroll. There are many benefits to studying with IPPE, which include getting live notifications on changes to payroll and seminars / webinars. Make sure you work with your tutor throughout every assignment to get the best out of the process. There will be times you feel you can no longer cope with studying but draw strength from the fact that the qualification will give your career a boost that is unimaginable. I entered into a payroll career by mistake, but studying with IPPE shaped my purpose. I have no regrets about being a payroll professional and I love doing it every day. How has your qualification helped in your career? My qualification has helped me gain promotions, exposed me to a network of other professionals and given me access to unlimited support from the CIPP, providing a wealth of knowledge. Do you intend to take any more qualifications with IPPE? Yes, I plan to proceed and get the next qualification. I love working in payroll and it’s all I want to do. My favourite part of payroll is that it evolves and there’s always something new to learn or implement. That’s one of the reasons why I studied engineering, as I love to be challenged and learn new things. Payroll is my passion. n
