Summer has officially clocked in, and Costa Mesa is ready to grill and chill! Whether you're a sun-chaser, a splash-maker, or a music-under-the-stars kind of person, we've got a little something for everyone this season (don't forget your sunscreen). Before we get into what's coming up, I want to give a huge shout out to the Costa Mesa community for making spring feel like a warm hug. From the swashbuckling good times at Springfest, to the epic powder-fueled battle at Color Rush: Capture the Flag, this season was one for the books. We came together for Earth Day, dove into water safety at the Safe Splash Bash, and opened our arms for inclusion at Access Costa Mesa's All-Abilities Resource Fair and at the Wild West Dance. Your presence made these events shine brighter than a freshly polished sheriff's badge. Now, get ready to kick off your sandals and soak in the season with crowd favorites like Concerts in the Park, Movies in the Park, and our July 3rd Independence Day Celebration and Fireworks Show, a Costa Mesa tradition you won't want to miss. Cool down under the stars at our Summer Event Nights at the Downtown Aquatic Center, or ride your bike to "Airplane" Park for the legendary 78th Annual Fish Fry & Carnival. For our young adventurers, we’re offering SMART Camp, Happy Feet Running Club, swim lessons, and a full lineup of youth and teen camps designed to keep minds curious and bodies moving. And this summer we're especially excited to celebrate our very own Costa Mesa Poet Laureate, Danielle Hanson. Also, July is Parks Make Life Better Month, so we invite you to get outside, stretch your legs, and feel the magic of the incredible parks right in our backyard. With 30 parks to explore, there's no shortage of space to relax. Whether you're catching rays or chasing shade, in Costa Mesa there is no wrong way to summer - just don't forget to hydrate, reapply that SPF, and maybe share a popsicle or two. A huge thank you to our incredible staff and volunteers who keep this department running year-round. You're the engine that keeps this fun train chugging along. Your hard work and heart do not go unnoticed. Here's to summer sun and sticky s'mores fingers, whether you're cannonballing into swim lessons (jk no cannonballs allowed), or enjoying a quiet afternoon under a shady tree, we're so glad you're spending your summer with us. See you out there & stay cool Costa Mesa. Brian Gruner Parks and Community Services Director

SPOTLIGHT ON Parks Make Life Better might sound like just a fun summer slogan, but for anyone who’s ever watched their child learn to swim, cheered on a local team, or simply taken a quiet breath under a shady tree, it’s more than that. It’s a reminder of the very real impact parks and recreation have on our daily lives. Every July, we join agencies across California in celebrating the true power of parks, and not just the green spaces and playgrounds, but the programs, people, and possibilities that come with them. This July is Parks Make Life Better Month month is about more than recreation; it’s about connection. It’s about equity, wellness, and belonging. It’s about ensuring everyone has access to safe, welcoming spaces where they can play, learn, grow, and thrive. In Costa Mesa, we take this commitment seriously. We believe parks are essential, especially in the summer when our community comes alive with activity. From Camp Mini Explorers, Free Park Performances, Aquatics, Active Senior programming, and more, our parks are where memories are made, and community is built. That’s why we stand so proudly behind our simple yet powerful mission: We create memories for the Costa Mesa community through innovative and meaningful recreation and community services experiences. This July, we invite you to celebrate Parks Make Life Better Month with us: attend a program, visit a local park, or simply enjoy the spaces that help us feel connected to each other. In Costa Mesa, we don’t just believe parks make life better, we create it every day.
