FAIRVIEW PARK’S SENSITIVE HABITATS
Fairview Park hosts a number of sensitive habitats in its 195 acres of natural open space, many of which are home to rare and endangered species. These habitats are extremely important to protect for both the health of the local ecosystem, and for global biodiversity conservation.
FLORA FEATURE: Lemonade Berry Lemonade Berry is part of the Coastal Sage Scrub (CSS) vegetation community at Fairview Park. The fruit is covered with a gooey, sour coating, giving it its name. The berries are eaten by a variety of birds and other wildlife. Spiders also love this bush and will cover it in webs. CSS is an important vegetation community that provides critical habitat for a wide diversity of species including birds, insects, reptiles, and more. The Federally Threatened California Gnatcatcher uses CSS exclusively to nest and has been documented nesting in the park.
