Happy Occupational Therapy Month! As April is Occupational Therapy Month, we are taking the opportunity to highlight what occupational therapy is, who it may benefit, and our own amazing occupational therapists and assistants! If you or someone you know has an injury or medical condition that is limiting your daily activities or preventing you from enjoying the things you used to be able to do and love, occupational therapy (OT) could be for you! What is occupational therapy? The American Occupational Therapy Association defines OT as “the only profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of daily activities (occupations). Some specific conditions/situations where an occupational therapist’s guidance and care can be beneficial are: OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY MONTH
VERSE OF THE MONTH “ “ HAPPY EASTER FROM FYZICAL!
“And the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying.” Matthew 28:5-6
• Down’s syndrome • Cerebral palsy • Autism • Asperger’s syndrome
• Tendinitis • Multiple sclerosis • Parkinson’s disease • Neurological conditions
What to expect from occupational therapy at FYZICAL Our OT plan includes: • An individual assessment to determine conditions, pain points, abilities, and patient goals. • Customized activities focused on the improvement of daily tasks and activities. • A final evaluation to determine if goals were met and to make changes to the plan or create another treatment plan if necessary. OT and physical therapy go hand in hand to help patients regainmobility and flexibility, improve range of motion, and grow independence in their daily routine by participating in their regular activities. Pediatrics and occupational therapy. Occupational therapists work with children, youth, and their families, caregivers, and teachers to promote active participation in meaningful activities. For children and youth, occupations are activities that enable them to learn and develop life, be creative and thrive. Recommendations are based on typical development, the child’s environment and any disability, illness, or impairment on the child’s development, play, learning, and overall occupational performance. Developmental Needs. In children, OT addresses developmental milestones such as sitting, crawling and walking; paying attention and following simple instructions. Injury Related Needs. When a child experiences a serious illness or injury, developmentally appropriate OT will emphasize physical skills to increasemovement, strength, and/or coordination; and adaptive skills or equipment to address deficits in cognitive function, sensory processing,
visual motor and perception, and the ability to form appropriate relationships. Emotional–Behavioral Needs. Occupational therapists are well suited to address children’s emotional and behavioral needs as they relate to everyday activities and social interactions. For example, occupational therapists help children develop the ability to cope with challenges, and to use calming strategies to deal with frustration, anger, and impulsivity to succeed at individual and collaborative tasks. If you are concerned about your child’s development or functional performance, consult your physician for an OT referral. In need of occupational therapy? Occupational therapy goes beyond addressing and preventing injuries. Therapeutic intervention takes into consideration all of your functional needs and implements activities to promote psychological well-being! If you want to begin improving your quality of life and ability to do the things you love, schedule an appointment with FYZICAL in Cordele today to learn more about the benefits of occupational therapy, and how it can change your world for the better. PARKINSON’S AWARENESS MONTH
Not only is it Occupational Therapy Month, but it’s also Parkinson’s Awareness Month! Did you know that approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) each year? But most people don’t really understand what PD really is. PD is a progressive disease that affects the central nervous system and the ability to coordinate movement in the body. The disease typically affects one’s ability to walk, develops tremors in the hands, and causes muscles to become rigid, making any kind of motion extremely difficult. PD can also affect speech, swallowing, balance and activities of daily living. Physical and speech therapy are key to help you improve your voice, range of motion, strength, stamina, and posture, so you can remain mobile and reclaim some independence in your life. With our LSVT LOUD, LSVT BIG, and Rock Steady Boxing programs, adapted for your individual needs, our therapists can help any patient in any stage of PD grow in mobility, strength, speech, and independence.

started to see progress from the very beginning. My handwriting is SO much better. My voice is so much stronger, and I hope to sing a solo soon. I have much more fluid motion in everything I do. My favorite thing about therapy at FYZICAL is the people - everyone I have met has been very patient and caring. Without reservation, I would recommend FYZICAL to family and friends, and will absolutely choose them if I need therapy again. I can’t say enough about this therapy program. It has exceed all my expectations!” Karen, his Physical Therapy Assistant, says, “He’s doing great in all areas, and I think the reason why is because he’s open to try anything that we suggest could be beneficial for him.” Brittany, his Occupational Therapy Assistant, says, “His tremors have decreased, and he’s able to write and sign his name now. He’s been able to return to his hobbies more and more.” If you know someone with Parkinson’s Disease and needs support in slowing or stopping the progress, give us a call. Therapy might benefit them, just like it did Mr. John!
