was primarily due to a 2.6 percent drop in energy prices. Food prices fell 0.3 percent, and prices for goods exclud- ing foods and energy remained unchanged. More than 60 percent of the decrease in goods prices was due to a 5.8 percent drop in gasoline prices. According to the University of Michigan Consumer Sen- timent Index (Preliminary), consumer sentiment remains stable for the second consecutive month. July’s index is two points lower than the previous month, well within the margin of error. Although sentiment is more than 30 per- cent higher than the June 2022 low, it remains subdued, with nearly half of consumers worried about high prices, even though they expect inflation to moderate in the com- ing years. The upcoming election adds to economic un- certainty, but the first presidential debate does not seem to have changed consumer perspectives significantly. Year-ahead inflation expectations dropped to 2.9 percent for the second month in a row, and long-term expectations also fell slightly to 2.9 percent, remaining stable compared to the pre-pandemic range of 2.2–2.6 percent.
